Can we start a "safe" dogfood list?

I’ve used the Rachel Ray stuff as my back up. If you’re concerned about the protein crack an egg in it.

I know this wasn’t meant for me. But when I read it I instantly pictured my dogs beard dripping with egg yolk. Icky phew!

LOL! I never thought of the complication of long haired dogs since I’ve only ever had short-haired dogs. I guess you could nuke some eggs for whiskered dogs.

Ugh, this is so frustrating…

I just picked up some Acana Pacifica for my sensitive cocker spaniels and come here to find out that they had quality issues too. I just want a grain free, fish based holistic food that is easily accessible and doesn’t have questionable processing or production. Am I really asking too much?!

The beard is the main reason for not going raw. but to continue on in the tangent, I don’t own a microwave, I’d have to fry the egg. Might as well cook up some meat and put that on top of the kibble instead. Currently she’s able to eat salmon… sort of gets the beard greasy. Maybe I could overcook it, dry it out a bit. Or make salmon jerky?? Or just forgetaboutit and hope she does well on her pathetic LID 21%protein kibble.

Like you, I want a bison or venison food that is grain free that can be found in the STATE I live in.

Why is this so difficult?

I was thinking about your challenge. I think you should hard boil a bunch of eggs and chop one onto each meal. You could easily boil and refrigerate a dozen eggs on the weekend or so.

How’s that?

Wellness had production issues as well. Pinnacle is a possibility. Does anyone know if they’ve had any recalls?

What “production” issue does Wellness have? The last I heard, Wellness pull products because they were made at the SC plant, but testing showed absolutely no problems

I feed Stella and Chewy’s freeze dried. My dog is picky and he practically dances for this stuff. I have a small dog so it’s doable.
I also feed Tripett, and he seems to like that Redpaw stuff Bumper recommended. They haven’t had any recalls that I could find.
ZiwiPeak is also very good. There’s Honest Kitchen too, but I usually add meat to it.

I want a dog food that has had zero affiliation with diamond and it’s plant. Regardless of whether they’ve tested bad, I just don’t want to take that risk. Are there any independent dog food producers anymore?

Is anyone feeding this? We have 3 dogs currently on the turkey formula - the two older hound mixes are doing very well, but the 2yr old aussie mix is losing his hair in small clumps.
We’ve only had him for about 3 mos, so I don’t know for sure what is normal for him, but his hair loss seems to have escalated in the time we’ve been feeding this (about 7-8 weeks).
We started feeding Back to Basics after trying TOTW, because the beagle mix was losing HIS hair on that. His coat has been shiny and nice since switching to BtB, but I don’t know what to do for the aussie.
My vet is no help on this - she had never heard of BtB, and suggested feeding Science Diet, which she sells, of course.[/QUOTE]

I used to feed the pork formula back when it had corn in it, and my dog did great! Then they jumped on the no corn thing and changed ALL the formulas. When I bought a bag of the new pork kibble, my dog had terrible non-stop diarrhea.
That’s not to say there is anything wrong with it, but my dog definitely did better on the old formula so I can’t use it anymore.

Ouch. I was totally clueless, since I use Dick Van Patten’s Natural Balance (Limited Ingredients), which was recommended by my very conscientious vet. I was told was different from some other Natural Balance brand. Looks like that’s wrong.

However, it took us 6-8 months, 2 years ago, to find a food that Toula (Irish Wolfhound) could eat, without a reaction to it. She is a tough dog to feed without her either turning it down, or getting the runs. And she’ll get scarily thin. Just bought a new bag of the venison & sweet potato, and the dates are newer than those on the list at least.

I understand why many are trying to avoid dog foods made at that plant. But I personally think that abandoning the brands that recalled part of their lines that might have been affected is not necessary.
I applaud some of those manufacturers for recalling just in case and risking the bad public perception in the name of safety. I suspect some of the brands not owned by Diamond may rethink their use of Diamond facilities.

My dogs were on Natural Balance LID which did seem to be helping their allergy issues. Since I couldnt get their variety as the store had pulled all the product, I went to Nature’s Recipe. I hope it works as well. But I would use NB again.

To put it in perspective, we have had recalls on much of our human food supply too. Remember the people sickened by tainted spinach? I guess we all need to decide what level of risk is acceptable.

I agree with MsM about abandoning some of these feeds that recalled as a voluntary action because of the association AND who tested and found things just fine.

But, FWIW, Canidae/Felidae is pulling out of Diamond-related plants and opening their own, though I don’t think it’s open yet. IIRC the plant is in AK? I posted a link to it on one of these threads, but it shouldn’t be hard to find through a google search.

This is directly from Wellness. I feel like Ive posted this a dozen times:

Currently our dry Wellness products are made at the following locations:

Oh that’s awesome to know

Hopefully to keep this in one place:

Southern States new(er) “Naturals” food - any knowledge of where it REALLY comes from?

It’s an Alltech product, mostly - their ingredients, or mostly their ingredients. I can’t find anywhere on their site where they might get their ingredients.

There’s a Lamb & Rice, and a Chicken & Pearled Barley variety. I don’t need to feed grain-free - it’s nice, we have some now because it was a clearance of a nice product, but don’t NEED to and don’t need to pay the higher prices just to feel good about ourselves

Anyone use earth born?

My issue is, I have to seriously question why any company would outsource production to Diamond at all. They have had chronic and serious production/quality issues for at least the last 7-10 years. That makes me wonder about the integrity of any company that would knowingly enter into a vendor relationship with them. I mean, I equate that to hiring Bernie Madoff as your financial advisor. Knowing what we know about him, why would you do that?! And knowing what is known about Diamond - again - why would you do that?!
