Considering buying a cutout-buildup pad, but all the ones i have found are square skirts. Horse needs a shorter skirt. I wonder if it is possible to trim and sew the pad to a rounded shape? Have any of you done this? i have a sewing machine, and i can sew a little bit. I just don’t think the thick pad would fit in the machine.
I just use a square pad with a round skirt.
Check some of the tack shops that sell barrel racing gear you should be able to find a round pad in what you want. I don’t think a regular sewing machine will be of use.
Cannot find anything online. We don’t have any western tack shops near me. NEED a round skirt. Ugh. Why does everything need to be so complicated?
That does not help me. i need a round skirt for a short-backed horse.
Do you have a shoe repair shop close?
They would have the heftier machine that could sew a nice looking corner in this pad:

They could even cut the pad back a few inches if the length is not short enough.
You can do it by hand if you have an awl, a bigger needle and waxed thread suitable for leather work.
A small, leather working pony would help hold it all together for you to sew it.

Lots of rounded edge pads, built up and some with cut out over the withers.
You can probably cut thru a wool felt type pad and probably no need to do anything else to it. If you are talking about a pad with some type of fabric cover and a lining of felt that might be different. If there is a local seamstress the might be able to help. An industrial sewing machine can probably get the job done.
i will have to look for a shoe repair shop. thanks for the suggestion.
You are close to Amish harness shops, they could do it for you, if you don’t find what you want in the link js provided.
Leid’s Shoe and Saddlery in Kutztown, PA can either modify a pad for you or find what you are looking for. Only about an hour away from where you are.

i know of Leids. i can try them. thanks.
Remember it has to be a built-up pad, why it is hard to find one.
That I assume means one built-up in front to compensate for shallower shoulder grooves?
The build up holds the saddle off the withers and the cut out allows the withers to not get smooshed.
You can use a regular cutback pad and put a wither relief pad on top.
i don’t want a pile of pads. i want this to be easy for one of my friends to go up and ride him without me having to be there. One pad. The cut out build up pads are great, but too long.
An upholstery shop should be able to modify a saddle pad.
Yep I modified a 1" felt pad with wither cutout to fit and English saddle by just cutting it down. Worked great!
Why wouldn’t that work? Just take out the middle and back shims and only use the front
True, that could work as well as cutting a larger built-up pad down.
