Canine cancer

Thank you JB! That information was very interesting. I plan to stop by the health food store today and see if they have it

Highly unlikely, if they do that would be a unicorn LOL We always ordered online

The cool thing about the packets is that the middle has a ā€œbonusā€ pill that we’ve saved (so we have dozens and dozens) to use in case of an acute bleeding situation. I talked to my then-boss, who is Chinese and from China, and he said he saw some of the most amazing results from friends using this for bleeding issues.

wow that really is amazing. Ok I’ll start looking online then. I was happened to catch a tv show the other night on Natgeo about the ancient Aztecs, Mayans etc and the things they were doing so long ago medically and it really was fascinating.

Ok Henri is having his biopsy tomorrow at 1230 so once the pathology is back we should know more how things will proceed.

I’m so sorry to hear this. We’ve lost two greyhounds to cancer - our first one had osteo and the other had a brain tumor. It sucks beyond belief. We amputated and did chemo on our first one, which gave her another 18 really great months. Our second one we did not treat as she was 12 and had other medical things going on, too. So I think the question of what to do is very individualized.

One thing you may want to ask about is the type of chemo @JB mentioned - it is given by pill. Ages ago they used to call it the Navy protocol (after the dog it was developed for). Not sure if it’s still called that and there are probably way more variations now than when I first learned of it back in … 2006 maybe?

Good luck with the biopsy tomorrow.

Definitely will explore the chemo option. Once they biopsy it then we will discuss treatment options more specific to whatever it is. I don’t really want anymore surgeries after this. We had a great pyreneees a couple of years ago who developed a really nasty necrotic mass on her throat that was cancerous. It was successfully removed, she recovered after the sx but it took several weeks, and shortly after that it came back with a vengeance and we had to pts.
I don’t want that for Henri. I’m willing to do what I can and can afford to keep him comfy and happy until he isn’t and then that will be that.
But hopefully we can prolong happy and comfy with some treatment

So His Highness had the biopsy today. The vet who did it is a board cerified surgery, oncologist and i don’t know what else. He was there Thursday when the original ct scan was done and saw the mass visually and via the ct scan. He agreed that it was large, obstructing the airway and aggressive.
Over the weekend HRH was on prednisone. I saw a marked improvement so much so that he seemed ā€œback to his old selfā€.
The vet called me while HRH was in recovery today and said that the mass had shrunk so much since Thursday that it is no longer in danger of obstructing the airway and that in fact it was so much smaller it was difficult to obtain a decent piece for the biopsy/pathology. I was totally on the floor after hearing that. I am so grateful that I didn’t put him down on Monday, which was the original plan.

So once the pathology comes back in a few days we will have another consult with the veterinary oncologist to see what is next. And for now I am exhausted, I feel as though i have been on a roller coaster from hell since Thursday. So I’m in bed with my little fat man and we are snuggling and cuddling.

Thanks!! I still can’t believe it! I’m
Very interested to see what the biopsy will reveal. The oncologist is suspicious of lymphoma but I think that is more manageable than some other possibilities.

That’s remarkable!
I remember before they biopsied the tumor in my cat’s mouth there was a possibility of it being a fatty tumor and not cancer and that it could shrink with steroids. I hope that is the case here and it resolves with treatment!

He’s the best little boy

It is Yunnan Baiyao. My dog was on it for the past year and he crossed the rainbow bridge yesterday. I have a few packages of his pills left that I’d love to send to someone to help their dog. PM me your info and I’m happy to send them to you!
