Canned cat food - feeding only one variety? UPDATED
FancyFeast does make a wet kitten food but only two flavors, turkey and ocean white fish. Have you tried the Fancy Feast in the green can? Its a little gushier and my kitties love it. There are also the FF Appetizers and the Broths.
Hmmmm…trying to remember a green can. I’ll have to check when I get home. I will check for the FF kitten food, too - thanks!

Pepcid is actually pretty good for nausea. Not as good as cerenia, but it works for many cats. You’d have to google for a dosage based on weight. My standard is 1/4 of a 10mg tab, but YMMV.
I actually use this myself! I’ll see what I can find - thanks!

My pancreatitis cat also was on a regimen of Pepcid to help with nausea. Once we got the nausea under control (he would go in for fluids and anti-nausea, if I couldn’t get him
to keep a pill down,) we would stimulate his appetite using mirtazapine and he’d start stuffing his face. He got steroids for maintenance.

Have they given kitty an appetite stimulant? It’s kind of expensive ($10/dose,) but it comes in a trans-dermal goo. Food options aside, I credit this with saving his life on multiple occasions.

Make sure it is regular Pepcid, NOT Pepcid AC, (per my vet at least.)

No, neither vet gave me anything for appetite stimulant, except the Science Diet A/D (which is now on her won’t-eat list). I will ask about this. Thanks!

When I got home, she licked some PetSmart Nutrical off my finger, but now won’t touch it.
This is why I just take a glob of it and smear it along the roof of their mouth, so that they HAVE to eat it. Tough love, and all that.

I was going to put it on her paw this morning, but couldn’t. I need to toughen up!

If she doesn’t feel well and isn’t super fastidious, she won’t care about it on her paw. My one kitty sure doesn’t :sigh: Has to go in the mouth.

(Watch out for her just flicking it off if you do try the paw thing, too! They can fling a glob of that stuff surprisingly far!)

I hope the pepcid will help her feel better enough to just eat!

Yep. Doesn’t help that I have had a bunch of elderly/sickly male cats who were never great about the grooming regimen even in their prime.

OP, it’s really not that bad to put it right in their mouth, even if they’re feeling sick. Like I said, with my last old kitty, I had FOUR years of stuffing two pills and a glob of Nutrical down his throat on a daily basis, and he still loved me.

I have a cat that, due to medical issues, is on a canned food diet. She eats very little, and two vets have said she either needs to eat or she’ll die (no diagnosis except liver damage). I have found through many different flavors/varieties of canned cat food (the only thing she’ll eat) that she seems to scarf down Savory Salmon from Fancy Feast faster than the others. Is it ok to feed her only this variety, or should I continue to alternate flavors?
I have a VERY finicky cat who is about 13 now and that is the only flavor of canned food she will eat she’s been that way for years. She also only will eat fish flavored dry but specifically the Savory Salmon from Fancy feast. Its not my first choice but I’d rather have an eating cat then one with hepatic lipidosis.

I would also ask your vet about Diazepam or Cyproheptadine to use as appetite stimulants.

I have a cat who need to drink better. I tried the cat milk, but she turned up her nose at it. My vet said to give her lactose free milk. She loves it and drinks quite a bit every day. The rest of the crew happily finishes what she doesn’t drink. I use the 2%, but, for calories, you could try the whole milk.

Thanks for all the ideas (and encouragement)! I just heard from the vet’s office that she should be calling me today.

UPDATE! I talked to the vet today! She was pleased with my kitty’s progress in slow, but steady. She wants to do bloodwork in another few weeks to see where the liver is at. She also said to feed her anything she’ll eat, and if it’s fish-based, all the better (healthier fat? Something about fat). I think we’ve turned a corner today - she actually attacked my slipper!

Good news, JumpQH! Yay for the plucky Ms Meow. And for your hard work to make her well

I’d recommend Denestra or one of the other Sam-e formulations if you’re dealing with liver problems. It’s OTC and available from most online pet supply places. Mirtazipine is also extremely effective, go with a lower dose first.

I know it sounds very drastic, but have you considered a feeding tube? They sound rather barbaric, but I went this route with one of my younger ones with pancreatitis. She eats like a horse now, but it saved her life and was actually very easy to manage. I knew exactly how many calories she was getting and slept a hell of a lot better than I did worrying about her not eating.

Yes, a feeding tube was recommended if she didn’t start eating on her own, but thankfully, she did - just increasing a frustrating bite at a time!

She is doing better, for sure, and slowly starting to act more herself. So happy!

Thanks, again, everyone for your support and suggestions!

I’m glad to hear that she’s doing better JumpQH!

That was my biggest concern - I’ve read that fish isn’t the greatest for cats, but I’ve noticed it’s her preference (she also likes the whitefish/tuna variety). Heck, I never knew a cat who wouldn’t eat ANY canned food, until now! She turned her nose up at everything except Fancy Feast, and is now getting even pickier on the variety.
I have a former feral (now spoiled house cat  ) that just walks away from Friskies canned food all the other cats eat it, but he just sniffs and walks away. Eats dry food just fine and he is fat and seems healthy so I don’t worry about it.

Wow, I think you’re lucky! I’m getting really sick of the canned fish-flavor smell!
