I did come across this…

Yeah, this is the link I mentioned earlier that sets off my antivirus. Just FYI.
OK…I can’t believe I will admit to this, but it was 35 yrs ago, and I was a teenager, so I can only claim stupidity allowed me to witness it and not report it to anyone…
There was someone at our barn that used to blow shotguns (of pot smoke) in his horse’s ear right before a class. The horse was normally pretty hot, but after this would canter in calmly, and jump around nice and quiet. No rushing at all.
And when I was a teen, my brother’s used to catch lizards/chameleons and put them in a coffee can with a hole in the lid, and blow shotguns into it. Then he’d dump them out on the ground…they would change colors randomly from green to brown no matter what color they were standing on…
I do not know how it works for arthritis, but if it would make Cloudy a mellow boy, I’d get his vet to prescribe it! Our overly alcoholic, backward state of Georgia is considering allowing medical marijuana. I can just see Cloudy all mellow and happy, bogarting a joint.
Seriously though, recreational marijuana should be legalized everywhere. It’s totally ridiculous to allow people to use tobacco and alcohol to kill themselves and others while saying the weed is evil. Reefer madness is such a silly notion.
Hmm. My luck I’d get the horse that gets paranoid. 1,000 pounds of freaking out? Bad enough when it’s not chemically augmented.
Someday I think when people stop freaking out about pot being illegal maybe some real testing and beneficial uses will be really refined with this stuff.
I hate smoking anything so if I were to use anything it would have to be an oil or edible

That would probably happen if a high THC strain was used. The low THC ones are the ones to use for pain and calming.
OMG Rory would be an excellent stoner.
I know there have been many stories since Washington legalized pot of dogs being poisoned (and cats) both accidentily and deliberately by ingesting pot, pot foods and being “smoked” by their owners.
Since they just auctioned off the first harvest to retailers here, I seriously doubt the high cost would be worth the benefit to horse owners: $600K for 300 pounds, or $2000/pound, before retail prices!! The average price per ounce is $200, or $3200/pound retail.
Oh yeah, it’s way cheaper to buy on the street still…
I’ve seen stoned dogs and cats IRL, who were in the room when people were smoking pot. No issues, just mellow animals. I’ve also had one boyfriend decades ago whose german shepherd would drink beer and pass out. Not a good drunk. (Cloudy drinks some beer but not enough to get him high. He’d be a mean, dour German drunk.) Beer is also supposed to be good for arthritis, according to my-aunt-who-doesn’t-drink’s doctor.
Remember, the quality of dope now in places like Colorado is a lot different, and more potent, than that stuff we all used way back when. Quality is much better and the product is tested and marketed. Besides which, I never learned to inhale, so holding my breath was more dizzying than getting high. I do know that pot is supposed to be good for glaucoma. Besides, it is so much less harmful and less dangerous than alcohol and tobacco. Hattie always seems to have just snorted coke, so I bet pot would really be good to mellow the full of arab blood ATA mare. I’d love to try it on my 2 horses. For temperament, then for old age aches and pains.
I used to feed hemp seed powder (HEMP, not the stuff for getting high, it is the stuff they make rope out of, I got it in a health food store) to an ancient arthritic mare for a few months. It helped her some until I found a more effective supplement. Hemp seed is a very good source for gamma linolenic acid (sp?), the only Omega 6 essential fatty acid that works AGAINST inflammation. My osteo-arthritis disappeared after I started doing GLA myself (Evening Primrose oil, changing to the MUCH CHEAPER hemp seed oil.) It worked, I stopped doing the hemp almost a decade ago and my osteoarthritis never came back.
The hemp seed powder is also an excellent complete protein source, easily digestable. Her coat improved greatly, she started building muscles better, her hooves got a little stronger, and it seemed to have absolutely no effect on her temperament or behavior except that she did not hurt as much, and therefore was a much happier horse.
I would not recommend using recreational or medicinal marijuana on a horse. I have heard that people get really paranoid at times on it. Unless a veterinarian told me to of course, but since one can get good, curative stuff from the hemp plant why bother?
This is a VERY old thread but I could not stand to see all the misinformation that was on it. CBD is used as a MIRACLE treatment for dogs, cats, people and horses. It is NOT marijuana. Nor does it have ANY psycho active effects. It’s FAR more effective for arthritis than any joint supplements you can buy or even injections. People are experiencing relief for issues that they have had for many years and prescribed meds have not helped. Issues like ADD, ADHD, PTSD, Crohns, Fibromyalgia, Arthritis, Migraines, and on and on…have all been helped dramatically with CBD oil. It is the newest thing out there and yes, we ALL have an endocannabinoid system…just as ALL vertebrates have…including our horses. That system is made for the cannabinoids…which is what CBD provides. Very cool stuff and well worth looking in to. Just be sure to look for the full spectrum plant oil…not the isolate. You can find out a lot of information on the video here… www.cbdwin.com
Thanks, Mahtowagal! I searched the topic recently and found this old thread (and, surprisingly, not much since on this board) and was sort of giggling at the misinformed posts.
CBD is a well-recognized pain and anxiety treatment for humans and our animals. By now, surely most of know some elderly dogs that got a new lease or an end-stage cancer patient who was able to eat and sleep again, thanks to CBD. Interestingly, one of the top lameness vets in my region recommends actual cannabis cookies as a calmant for horses on stall rest. His opinion is that, for some horses, it’s far superior to the conventional sedative medications that are used to keep horses sane during rehab. The issue for some of us, of course, is getting it legally.
CBD is NOT marijuana. The THC in marijuana is what gives people a high. There is none in CBD. It comes from hemp. There’s a company that even makes it from hops. It does, however, work as a powerful anti inflammatory and anti anxiety treatment in people. I know several people that use it rather than drugs. I too am wondering about it’s use in horses. NOT MARIJUANA
Someone i showed with as a teen, used to blow shotguns (of pot) in the horses ear before a hunter class. His horse was more of a jumper type that tended to get quick. After his “hits”, he would canter into the line, kind of like “la,di,da, oh, a jump”. It definitely quieted him down.
i am not recommending this, but i have seen someone give pot to their horse. No idea if it would do anything for pain or appetite.
What about CBD Oil? I know someone in COlorado who gives CBD treats to an old dog - helps him a lot. And CBD oil is, apparently, legal in all 50 states. No /very low THC
My equine massage therapist has been giving her horse who was injured badly CBD oil. She says it seems to be helping. However, she is also using a vet and vet’s advice in conjunction. The vet actually recommended it.
