Can't get Standlee Chopped Alfalfa anymore - what to use?

 I know what you mean! The men at the Co-Op or Burris (where the really nice Montana hay is) raise their eyebrows at me when I show up for hay without my trailer, and just the Suburban. “You’re not gonna fit all that in their ma’m” is common. I reply “Watch me!”. They are always amazed.

I think my record is 16 regular 70# square bales. So, one was in the passenger seat… but still. Its handy to have something that will haul that much hay in inclement weather, and the trailer just makes the truck use more gas when you only need a few bales.

Just in case anyone is wondering, you can also fit 6 2string bales in the back of a Toyota Matrix or 3 in a Toyota Prius…
but it’s tough to get all the hay out of the headliner

For future reference, you can get 6 regular hay bales in a Honda Crosstour - but you have to remove the roll-up screen on the hatchback… and then listen to your husband cuss and mutter trying to figure out how to put it back!

I could get three bales - possibly four - in the back of my old Jetta. (I miss that car).

Why not just soaked alfalfa cubes?

He already gets soaked alfalfa pellets twice a day (sometimes three times when its bitterly cold out). I want chopped hay to put with his Bermuda for overnight feeding - something that will last overnight. If I give him another mash in his feed bucket, it will be gone in 10 minutes. I’m very thankful that he’s a good eater and not picky.

Oh, and I never have heard back from Standlee. I’m a bit disappointed - because they seemed like like they were really interested in helping me.

By a leaf shredder (Worx, Sunjoe, any "weed whipper in a bowl) and chop your own.

I did look into that last year, I think after someone posted a thread about it. Spent hours reading reviews of several leaf choppers. The consensus of the reviews was that for anything other than dry leaf litter, you had to change the strings constantly. Even with leaves, the strings wear out quickly - with hay, even more so. So at that point, I decided to stay with the Standlee Chopped Alfalfa in the bag. Besides, having another mechanical thing that needs maintenance and fixing… ugh. We have such a collection already!

However, if it has really has disappeared from my local market, I may just have to revisit that alternative.

The string that came with my Worx shredder was crap–I went and pulled samples from everything that we had floating around in our detached garage and found some heavier gauge stuff that worked. BTW, the more you change out those strings the faster you get at it!
