I have a BS in AnSci
I went on to get an MS in Ag and Extension Education
I worked for the USDA as an egg grader for a while. Now I am a professor and teach An Sci! Haha I love and spend time with my intro students doing career exploration. So many think there is Vet School or Vet Tech and they have no idea what their other possibilities are
I have a BS in An Sci. I had some major life changes happen in my senior year of school that meant I had to live in a certain area and be available for my family. Unfortunately, it seemed the only jobs I qualified for at the time either wouldn’t pay much more than I had been getting paid working for the local grocery store, or paid well but required being away from home the majority of the time. I went back to school and got my high school teaching cert. in several high school science subjects. I have no regrets. I love teaching and found my niche.
Miss-O, how long did it take for you to complete the teaching cert?? I LOVE my career field and want to stay in it for the next math 19 years, but the retirement is kinda poopie so I’m always weighing my options. Plus… I run the risk of a career-ending injury at any time, so it would be nice to have a back up. My degree is in English, with a minor in Animal Science and a minor in Creative Writing, so I’d go the English route and not Science…
It largely depends on the state and from what I gather my state is one of the tougher ones for obtaining a teaching cert. To my understanding there are some states which allow you to get certified by simply subing and taking a test. Just contact your state’s department of education and they should be able to tell you.
But to finally getting around to answering your question. I got my cert. through a great local college that was different from the one I graduated from. It was through a special program they had to help adult learners. I first had to meet the school’s criteria for their own biology degree. I didn’t have to take many courses but it still took up some time. The actual teaching classes were maybe two semesters but it could have been one of I was allowed to go full time. Due to it being a special adult learning program I was unable to go full time. Then one semester of student teaching.
Not many schools in my area allowed people to tack a teaching cert. onto a bachelors degree. This was the only school in my area to offer that program. All the others would have required me to get my masters. Since I heard several times through the grapevine that local districts didn’t want to hire people at the masters level I went the certification route. Now that I’m in the game I’m not sure that is so true but it may be something you will want to ask around about.
