Cat food (wet) that Tom might like? - Update post #29 on Oct 7

Thank you everyone.

I plan to buy a selection of canned foods on Monday. The store has a really good variety and you can get single cans. Based on that I’ll try to get a handle on what sort of consistency and species he likes to eat.

Picked up some nutritional yeast and sprinkling that on the left overs of the morning meal around lunch time got him to eat some of the food that was left over.

The store with the nutritional yeast didn’t have pepcid, but I forgive them since you could buy nutritional yeast via the bulk bins, thereby enabling an expensive trial.

This is my favorite Pepcid:

And my favorite pill splitter:

The Walgreens generic is teeny tiny pills, it makes it easy to sneak it into stuff. This splitter makes it easy to get equal quarters.

I hope he likes the yeast!

My soon to turn 20 year old cat used to eat anything but he’s gotten more particular in the last year. Fancy Feast was always the emergency back up (behind raw and Weruva) but it’s now one of the only things he eats reliably. The other is a Whole Foods brand. Perfect ingredients have become less important to me lately so I don’t use a magnifying glass when reading the label, but it’s at least as good as FF and the 5 oz. cans end up costing less.

Something I’ve found to be helpful with all picky cats is to rotate the food before they tell you it sucks. Chicken for breakfast and salmon for dinner on Monday. Turkey for breakfast and beef for dinner on Tuesday. Tuna for breakfast and back to chicken for dinner on Wednesday, etc… Also throw a couple shredded or gravies in there every week for a change in texture.

My guys like the Fancy Feast pate. When I had a sick kitty, Gerber meat baby foods were a life saver. The plan ones. Ham, chicken, turkey, beef. She loved them all.

Here’s an analysis list from a vet, if that helps

A vet that I used as my equine vet until I moved my horse out of her area. Small world. Her website is super useful.

Thank you everyone!

A combination of a few days of pepcid, adding nutritional yeast to food, and taking away most of the dry food has Tom nearly finishing cans of Fancy Feast twice a day. Not quite as enthusiastic about the Nulo, especially the second portion from the can.

Now I’ll be out of town Tuesday thru Sunday and will instruct the cat sitter not to overdo it with the dry food. I made a mark on the little measuring scoop.

Mine haven’t been that wild about Nulo either. I’m glad he approves of FF!

Oh My ! None of those brands are even in my rural stores and just by the names I already know I couldn’t afford it!

My cats love Purina “Friskies Farm Favorites” – Pate only please ( any flavor) and are doing well on it so we are good. I mean they eat mice and small vermin by choice, so why should they eat better than me?

Most are available on Chewy with free shipping. They have Tiny Tiger and Fancy Feast on there, but yeah, a lot of them are premium options. We’re swapping to raw + EZcomplete because it’ll be cheaper than the cheapest options they have there with my husband’s hunting/family cows.

I think the issues the list was trying to target were high carbs or additives that aren’t ideal.

Or add warm water, most neutered males should get extra water anyway.
