Cat not eating/drinking 4 days post surgery

Update?

My cat wouldn’t eat with his e-collar on after a cystotomy- but he would like/tear at his sutures with it off. Solution was to feed cat off a spoon- and he still prefers to be fed off a spoon. spoiled.

Kitty spent yesterday at the clinic. Still no fever or other signs of infection but she has been started on a course of antibiotics in case. She had lost quite a bit of weight just in the last day. She was given SC fluids and force fed, and then was later willing to eat a bit, according to the tech. She came home last night and has still been unwilling to eat, so we have been force feeding her a/d which she has not enjoyed but has tolerated. She did vomit this morning after eating but seems to be keeping food down since then; she has also had some diarrhea. Vet called this morning for an update so I am waiting for a call back from her.

Sometimes heating up A/D a little (especially if it’s been kept in the fridge) can make it more appealing. Be warned – it also makes it verrry stinky!

Jingles for your little girl. Good on you for noticing something was wrong and taking her to the vet!

I, too, have a cat having appetite problems after having her teeth cleaned and some extracted. Physically, she is fine, also like your cat.

I haven’t been able to get her to eat well for two days now, though I have gotten small bits of this and that down her, at times. Today, the vet gave me some cyproheptadine to use as an appetite stimulant. I gave her a dose around 1 PM, and, so far, she has eaten two small meals right up.

Maybe that would help your cat also?

Louise, she has been on cypro starting today and still no eating. She did drink a little water, I think (she was doing something with her water anyway) and sniffed at food, but we’re still having to force feed. I am glad it’s working for your kitty!

She spent today at the clinic again and they ran a battery of tests that should be back tomorrow morning and will hopefully tell us what is going on. We have added cypro to try to help her appetite and she also had an anti-emetic so hopefully she will be keeping more food down. We have been force feeding every few hours and she is tolerating it (not happy, but tolerating) although she is noticeably getting weaker. She did find the energy today to hiss at and smack the dog which I’m somewhat ashamed to say I found encouraging; she is very strong-willed and tempermental and seeing signs of her attitude is comforting.

Thank you for your kind words and advice- I am really at a loss as to what this could be and playing the waiting game is not something I am good at. My brother is graduating from college this weekend (graduation season for our family!) and I will not be able to go due to ailing kitty. Please keep jingling for her and sending positive thoughts… she is very special and I hate seeing her feeling so badly and being so helpless.

Wondering how your kitty is doing this morning?

I’m sorry if I missed this somewhere, but have they taken an abdominal radiograph or ultrasound?

Kitty has decided that she wants to try nibbling again! She is still not eating much but she has been drinking water and nibbling at a dish of dry food that we left out. She has also been jumping on the countertops this morning, going upstairs and beginning to get into trinkets- all very good signs. I will continue to give the A/D as she is not eating much yet (I think this whole force feeding experience may have ruined canned food for her…) but I am very encouraged by the interest in eating! I am FINALLY heading out to see my horse for the first time since I have been home, and will leave kitty with a smorgasbord of food, chicken and fish to tickle her fancy. I am leaving food on the counter for now since the dog thinks she has died and gone to heaven… hopefully this will not become a habit! She is not in the clear yet and my fingers are still crossed for her to continue to improve but I am SO happy to see her looking and acting more normal. Thank you for the jingles and well wishes, we both appreciate it!

This all sounds very promising! Do keep us updated about kitty’s progress.

I know what you mean about food preference. I’m very much afraid that, now that I have introduced my cat to the wonders of Fancy Feast, trying to tempt her appetite, I won’t be able to get her to eat the good stuff again.

I gave her a pain pill[/QUOTE]

What was the name of this “pain pill?”

How is the kitty?

I, too, am wondering how the kitty is doing now?

Thank you all for the help and advice! Kitty is back to normal now, inhaling her food, picking on the dog, giving everyone attitude. It took her a couple days to work back up to normal eating habits but all seems to be well now. I’m still not sure what the initial cause was or what finally resolved it (maybe the appetite stimulants?) but I am very grateful that she is doing better and whatever the issue was seems to have resolved. I was very worried and hated to see her looking and acting so ill. Thank you again for the jingles and positive thoughts!
