Cat people - is your bedroom off limits?

Everyone has access to my bed…dog and cats. I have to sleep with the thermostat practically set to freezing (ok, exaggerating!) because of all the furry body heat at night.

I LOVE snuggling with kitties at night…except when they trap me-one on each side of my legs- makes me claustrophobic!

I typically try and keep the bed covered. I did that for the dog, pre-cats. In fact, I got a cute, inexpensive, lightweight quilt for the black dog on my white duvet. Then I got orange cats, and the dark BLUE quilt is covered in light colored cat hair  Oh well. I live on a farm, track more mud in than the animals…whatever.

My bedroom is off limits to both dogs and cats, mainly because DH is allergic to the cat! We’re lucky he even lets the guy in the house (but he’s a softie… and doesn’t want him eaten by coyotes). Even if he weren’t allergic, I love not being walked on in the middle of the night, or my nose or toes played with or nibbled. They have the rest of the house at night so its not like they’re that bad off.

As our now deceased kitties aged the would leave us barfs and bits of kitty litter on the bed during the work day. So in self-defense I purchased inexpensive waterproof mattress cover. Purchased at Big Lots, around $25 for a king size. The cover is a cloth material on top lined with plastic underneath.
This was placed over the bed every morning so any little messes did not result in changing the bed linens. Easy to clean up messes and wash the cover at night so it was ready for the next day.
FYI - the top cloth material got softer with repeated washes. It allowed our kitties to sleep on the bed, it was theirs after all .
I’ll definitely have to show your post to my husband, because he repeatedly tells me that we are the ONLY people on the planet who use waterproof mattress covers for pets - not because WE’RE incontinent - lol!

I love having Stoli snuggle next to me in the morning on weekends when I sleep in or when I am reading, though when he lays on my neck I have to shove him away

the dogs are not yet trustworthy to stay out of the kennel for the night but I would love for them to sleep on the bed to, they like to snuggle to

I must be doing something wrong - as I use the cheapo-cover sheet - and it doesn’t work. My cats don’t even burrow. My nose is still smothered in cat hair. Just cat hair stuck in the cheap cover sheet.

The cats graciously allow me to share their bed, reserving a bit of the edge for me. I cannot imagine not allowing them in the bed, Da Lip and Blue on my arm and Da Magpie curled up behind my back, and the winter additions of Jack the Fat, and TIppy the Scared.

I’ve kicked the cats out of the bedroom before at the request of various SO’s, but I like having the cats on the bed. For my Siamese, it’s her happy place, and while she has several fleecey beds set up for her around the house that she likes to partake in, she is always upset when she doesn’t have access to the bedroom.

My orange kitty sleeps in a little ball right next to my pillow and one of my favorite things in the world is falling asleep to the thrum of his purr that resonates through the mattress.

I do hate having my legs trapped, but I do enjoy their company. I have a cotton duvet that I launder frequently, which keeps the hair accumulation down. I also put a washable blanket at the foot of the bed, and I often find them snoozing on it during the day.

I think I am going to have to kick mine out. Last night I woke up in the middle to the night when I heard her jumping around on the bed. Lying on my side with my arm extended I felt her run over my arm. Or at least I thought it was the cat. Next I felt what was definitely the cat run over my arm. ‘Hmm, if that was the cat, what ran over my arm right before her…’ Yup, next thing I knew she was scrambling off then under the bed with a mouse squeaking. She must have brought it up on the bed, then dropped it while it was still alive!

A mouse ran over me while I was in my bed!!!

LOL - I bought the mattress cover out of self defense. Loved seeing the girls curled up on the bed, but got tired of finding little messes and having to strip the bed. Not to mention comments from DH, who is a BIG softy, but not fond of kitty Barton his bed .

Glad to know there is another “ingenious” soul out there.

My three cats all sleep on the bed with me, (I have no life…really) .There is a total of about 45 pounds of them. But they are family so they go and sleep anywhere in the house they want except the kichen counters when I am cooking. I have a good vacume and a ‘hair picker-upper furniture thingy’ to keep the hair under control.

I am allergic to cats but have two. We keep the master bedroom completely closed off to the cats. It’s helped my breathing immensely, and they’ll survive the separation.

Two out of three sleep with us every night. Can’t imagine them not (plus my Bobo kitty can open doors, so I don’t think it would last long anyway…). Be careful about the bedding you pick; fabric can make a big difference in the collection of cat hair. My last comforter was a really nice cotton Nautica down one in mainly navy blue. BIG mistake. That thing attracted hair like you would not believe. Replaced it with a sage green quilt made of a silkier material (I think Ralph Lauren brand?) and it’s done really well. Hair doesn’t stick at all.

I do keep a fleece blanket at the end of the bed, and I find that they sleep on it maybe 75% of the time? Easy to wash, too.

My two indoor cats do have run of the house, including my bedroom. One of them is a burrower and even managed to wedge himself under the blankets in a professionally-tucked hotel bed.

I got in the habit of giving night-time treats with my first pair of cats so I would know where they were before I went to sleep (yes, I am a worrier). The two now wait patiently by the doorway until “it’s time”. I go to sleep with the burrower in my arm and the other at my feet. I usually wake up with the burrowers still (or back) in my arm and the other meowing in my ear.

My comforter covers are all tightly woven highly patterned cotton and I use a lint “glove” every couple of days to clean it up.

Our bedroom isn’t off limits, but they aren’t bed burrowers. Usually they are in there to sit in the window, although the new blinds ruined that. I occasionally close the door during the day when we are gone because they have phases where they like to wreak havoc.

At night the cat’s go in the basement. We were going insane with lack of sleep. The minute we went to bed they began wrestling, and I swear they were throwing each other against the bedroom door. Then they would procede to race around the wood floors, sliding. and then clawing their way back up to full speed. Then at 4 am they meowed for breakfast. We can occasionally hear them remodeling the basement, but it’s muffled.

That way there is no hair on bed linens or cats stuck in closets or puke to step in right out of bed.
For extra fun, I used to have a cat that liked to burrow under the covers to cuddle with me at night. And then vomit :dead: Stepping on cat puke is nothing compared to having one harf in the sheets right next to your body. Ugh.

Current kitties are allowed in our bedroom. They’re hairy, and vomit occasionally, but thats about it. We have a Maple laminate flooring, so it’s easy to clean, and we keep a light cotton blanket on top of our comforter so it’s easy to wash when it gets hairy or puked on. The dog sleeps at the foot of the bed on my side, Bad Kitty sleeps all over my husband, and Good Kitty sleeps in his own bed, on the floor, next to the night stand.

Kities are banned from my son’s bedroom, however. Apparently DH was traumatized as a child when the family cat mistook his box of Legos for the litterbox, and he’s sure our kitties have similiar intentions.

We have a female Siamese mix cat, and a Boxer mix dog. I hardly have to get the cat’s name out of my mouth and our dog (who believes she is the “cat police” in our house) will find the cat and make her quit whatever naughty behavior she is doing. (going on tables… stealing things… etc.) Sometimes the dog just stops her without me even yelling the cat’s name.

The cat is locked in our spare bedroom every night. It has her food, water, and litter box so she has everything she needs. I will get no. sleep. EVER. if I let her stay out. She actually goes in there on her own most nights because it is routine now. Aside from her crazy antics at night, I could otherwise NOT sleep with her anyway! Way too much hair that sticks to EVERYTHING - and she isn’t even a long hair cat. yuck. During the day when my SO & I are working, the dog usually occupies the bed (her hair is very tolerable, and there is the “dog’s blanket” over our comforter during the day) so the cat doesn’t touch it.

Love my cats but they are semi banned from bed. They like predawn starts - I don’t and they like the middle of the bed which I also like

These days they don’t actually want to sleep with me except on special occasions such if I have been away and then there is no keeping them out.

All our animals are allowed in the beds…well, the young BC mix is only allowed in if there is a person in it, otherwise she’ll shred the bedding! Oddly, I’ve found that my long haired Coon Cat leaves far less hair around than the short haired DSH. The long haired cat won’t let me brush him, the short haired one loves to be brushed. The long haired cat takes care of his own coat and must do a pretty good job, given the lack of mats, the dirth of long hair around the house and the volume of hairballs he hacks up. My biggest hair problem is in the car…the ACD/JRT mix has mid-length, coarse, white hair that embeds in all the carpeting, I’ve found a damp sponge works best to get most of it out, the vacuum has no effect.

Sigh. Well, mine are now all banned at night because new kitten/devil/monster jumps on DH’s (bald) head all night. Kitten is a perfect angel when he sleeps with just me but my husband needs to actually get some sleep.
