Cat Real Estate: Does your cat have a high rise tree thing in your house?

![]( have two cat trees and I built shelves down the hallway, over the front door and they end in the living room at one of the trees.

As you can tell, they all use the shelves and the tree. The second tree is just like this one but I paid much less for it - got lucky and found it on Craigslist in almost brand new condition.

Sammy and Sunny like the top perch best, Thomas likes the one in front of the window best and Snickers & Jellybean don’t really care where they lay.

I have several other scratching posts and another condo but it’s round and has three cubby levels. Mine use it for scratching, but don’t ever get in it. The two open ones definitely have been worth the money.

We made one for my guy who has to be locked in the spare bedroom during the day (cat being free was driving the dog in the crate batty). We added dangling bells and feathers to keep him more entertained and he definitely uses it. We built it so the dog couldn’t easily get up on it which has allowed the cat to use it more. We put carpet on all the flat platforms and then used concrete post tubes to make a hanging tube and a half circe perch.

Several tall ones, one on porch. Some of the tall ones have a fairly small footprint. Some take up half the room. They are all used. Having now bought
half a dozen or so, the more sleeping perches up high the better, especially
those that have a rim around the space. Downstairs get used some. Rope is
better than carpet on the scratching portions.

Craigslist is the place to go for these. Haven’t paid more than $50 and all have
been in very good or new condition. These seem to appear in spurts, for some
reason. Some folks are smoking something with their pricing, others are very
reasonable.

We have a cat tree. It goes to up to the ceiling. It is a cheapie one from Walmart. He LOVES it! He uses all levels, although his favorite is the top one. He especially like to try to bop you on the top of your head when you walk by. He is on his third one though… when he gets his zoomies, he loves to launch himself on it at full speed (then launch off!).

I’ve been contemplating getting one with a little house in it since he loves boxes. Every time we have a box, it is understood that it will stay on the floor for a few weeks until it is no longer usable.

So your cat likes cheap housing. I’d imagine other cats are similar. A new cardboard box is great. Is this like buying a new double-wide every 2 years as opposed to restoring the old farm house that’s 100 years old?

Ah yes, BOXES! My gang ADORE the ones one gets from Costco - particularly the ones that have been used in displays, thus having one side cut out; or ones that were used to ship produce, thus having paw-sized peekaboo ventilation holes. Hours, days, weeks & weeks & weeks of amusement.

The cats are 16 year old litter mates and sometimes go through fighting spells. I have a big sliding glass door in my living room that leads out to a patio. I used to put a selection of dog and cat beds next to the window, but then the dogs (70 lb labs) would choose to curl up in the little beds intended for cats. http://www.target.com/p/oval-cuddler-with-cushion-brown-brown-27x21/-/A-14470948#prodSlot=medium_1_31&term=cat+bed That really pissed off boy kitty, so he’d pee on all the pet beds by the window. Then nobody used any of them. I decided to try the kitty condo above and it was a big help. Boy kitty sits on the shelf second from the top and plays with the plush ball attached to elastic. Girl kitty likes to curl up in the cubby hole. The carpeting that came with it didn’t seem very soft or kitty-cozy, so I put some folded up pieces of fleece on each level. Kitties love it!

I’m not the handy type with a hammer and nails, so for $90, it was a great investment.

So you people with ample cardboard lying around should think about building a Cat Housing Development.

As a kid, we po’ folks (with bad parents who would buy us $3 pet rats, but wouldn’t buy us those plastic, maze-y Hab-itrail things) would build our own rat cities out of cardboard boxes and tubes.

My kitties have lots of things to get off the ground: table with the fish, dresser with the fish, window sills, our new enormous bed (which they don’t move from…). Plus we’re in an apartment, so they can go out on the balcony and peer down/watch their bird feeder.

Exactly. That’s what I think my cats would do to me. It’s one reason I started this thread. Also, I wanted to see swanky cat digs that I hadn’t thought of and their attractive residents.
