Cats of the Farm: The Pride Goes On

My second annual autumn photo shoot with Cotton, the incredible, poseable (provided it’s in a tree) cat.

Oh Cotton, the camera really loves him!! He’s a calendar boy.
Can we have some closeups of the three little amigos? Would love to see their little faces.

Best efforts on the three amigos. They are moving targets.

awww, thank you. Looks like they’re growing and healthy. “blessed” Mary- perfect.

Mary is definitely the easiest of them to find still. Although she is quite playful. She isn’t antisocial (with cats), just very aloof with people.

They are growing. Back to the vet Wednesday for another exam, but they look a lot better than they did at their previous appointment. Mary, by the way, is the largest of them. She has LONG legs. She looks like she’s on stilts when she is standing up and not sitting on her paws pondering things. Brio is a compact roll of dynamite, and Psalm is about in the middle.

Those Cotton pics are frame worthy. nice job at capturing all the color in the backdrop.

Isn’t it about time to start prepping the outdoor house with straw? Are they still using it or has the novelty worn off?

I fluffed up the cat hut last week. Yes, they use it.

Checkup for the three amigos today. They are looking much better than they were that first trip and growing well. Doing fine. Estimated age today 10 weeks. They got round one of shots, were wormed, and will get round two of shots on November 19th. The clinic staff was debating a bit about scheduling their surgeries then or waiting more, receptionist saying most people usually wait until older. But the vet who saw them today and was still standing there by the counter said, “I’ll do them. I like to do them small.” They made a crack that he would neuter anything, which made me smile as I pictured that on a vet bumper sticker. Anyway, they are scheduled for November 19th for more shots and speutering.

Brio, predictably, was the first out of the carrier to get examined. Psalm was second, though Brio would have happily taken another turn, shot and all. Mary was tucked absolutely into the back of the carrier and fought extraction tooth and claw, even splaying herself against the door (I’ve mentioned that she has LONG legs). The vet said to her as he was examining her, “You’re not going to turn your purr motor on? The other two purred for me.” Mary just eyed him coolly. She reminds me of a miniature Rascal.

Back home, and they seem to have forgiven me. Hope they forgive as quickly for the appointment in November. If they thought today was bad, they will definitely get the bar raised then.

Ah, Cotton…so handsome. He looks positively regal in the first pic.

I can just see those little three the way you describe them. Mary has plenty of tortitude, thanks very much she says.

Your kitties are all so very happy thanks to you.

I got some good pictures of the kittens yesterday afternoon. They were taking a Saturday afternoon nap and were still. Brio did wake up enough to wonder if I wanted to play.

Mary. She has no white on her, but she does have a light tan patch on each front paw. When she sits on her brisket with her paws together, which is a favorite pose of hers, it almost looks like she has praying hands.

They do have interesting color schemes, all three of them. There is a discussion ongoing about what Brio’s facial markings resemble. Current candidates are a firework, a volcano erupting, an odd footprint (if viewed top to bottom), a teepee, and a salt shaker. I’ve had a few tuxedos in life, and I’ve never seen that before. He also, unlike other tuxes I’ve known, has his bib end and does not have the complete under stripe front to back.

A really neat picture I got this afternoon. Note the background.

And here’s Pilgrim, who is still, as I tell him, the one and only tuxedo scientist in the house. Brio is definitely not a scientist.

Five years.

Today marks five years since my friend the Cat Lady died, leaving her large pride behind as evidence of her love for felines. Cat Lady might have had lots of cats, but she was not a candidate for Animal Hoarders. All were fixed – well, except for the kittens added that last summer, who just needed to grow some before their turn. All had flea prevention. Many litter boxes were all around, although they had access to outside and preferred that. They were healthy and happy there.

After her death, several were placed. A few have died since then. Many remain here on my farm, including the amazing Cotton, who climbs trees on command, and my favorite of hers, Rascal.

I have done my best for them, my friend. Rest in peace.

I think she would be very happy with how you have taken care of her cats!

I’m testing picture functions on the new forum.

Oh, brave new world that has such beds in it.

This bookcase in the living room is reserved for decorative, special, high-class editions. Pilgrim qualifies.

the three Amigos have really grown since the last pics. So it looks like they’ll live the life of leisure as indoor kitties?

They are definitely in a growth spurt, starting to look like little cats now. Here is a picture up against an adult cat, so you can compare. Mary is the largest by a little bit of the three kittens.

They will probably stay indoors. They are behaving very well in terms of the rules of indoor civilization, litter boxes, scratching posts, and such. They are very active, but there’s a lot of space to be active in without committing sins. I am wondering how the Christmas tree will do next month.

They will probably stay in. Mary is still the flightiest of them, and I’d rather keep her in walls so that I know where she is, roughly speaking. Brio is a hoot. Such joyful enthusiasm of life. And Psalm is turning into a specialist at the midnight purr. I love it when I wake up and there is just a low rumble going on next to me. Nobody was being petted, just purring at the general state of life. The world needs more purring. Psalm is also the plushest of them and very nice to reach over and stroke in the dark. Mary is silkier, and Brio has a very short coat, shorter than most short hairs, even.

I still haven’t seen joint playing with the older cats, but we are starting to get a joint curl here and there.

Message from Atticus: “They’re mine. They’re all MINE!!!”

(This is not a posed shot.)

either Atticus has a very organized brain and needs things in their proper place or he’s a die hard
narcissist and to heck with the other kitties. Really cute pic.

Atticus has a strong playful streak.

He is also my crafting cat. Every evening, I do crafts for 30 minutes at the end of the day for brain exercise/Alzheimer’s prevention/unwinding before I go to bed. My favorite is counted cross stitch. Atticus knows that when I am playing with string, it is my string and he is not allowed to chase. Yes, he knows. However, he will park on my lap, inches from the canvas with the string going back and forth, and you can feel the cat jerk with every stitch. He doesn’t chase it, but OH he wants to. However, he doesn’t remove himself from temptation, either. All other cats, having learned that they can’t chase the crafts, go do something else rather than stay there with their noses pressed flat against the window lusting. Not Atticus.

Brio gets very worried when I pick up toys and put them back in the toy box. Never mind that there are still other toys out or that the toy box is accessible or that we do this every single day. It still worries him. What if they all disappeared?

And then I have to smile thinking that this little orphan from a feral mom has toy worry as his biggest problem in life.
