Cats of the Farm: The Pride Goes On

This was an electrician’s ladder that was pretty tall. At one point both Dice and the electrician were on the ladder.

Life is full of disappointment.

Rascal on Pedestal Rock this morning. This is a posed shot by request, but I did have to ask her five times before she complied. Feline independence must be preserved.

Lead us into Temptations. (There are seven, although you’ll probably count anyway. I, too, am a member of Compulsive Cat Counters Anonymous.)

Pharaoh went to the vet this morning for a dental. While they were checking him in, the receptionist noted that he is now considered a “senior” cat at 8 years old, so they recommended gas anesthesia.

I’m feeling old now. That little, thin, wobbly kitten who marched straight into Cat Lady’s is NOT a senior cat. No way.

Pharaoh’s contribution to the day, sigh. He should feel better, though. The last couple of weeks, he was licking his chops at times, nothing to do with food. He did have a couple that she thought were bothering him.

Wow is that reasonably priced! I’ll bet it will be upper of $700 here for the same procedure.

I do appreciate my vet. They are very reasonable.

However, I also live in the midwest. I know it’s higher in many other areas, as everything is.

I am in West Michigan and most of the vets in my area (GR) have retired or jumped onto the $$ wagon. Most small animal vets do not do emergency calls and have contracted with the big vet corporations to send the emergency calls (even daytime) to the expensive vet ERs. I had to choose to put a blocked urinary tract cat to sleep because the quote was $4,000 to treat. Heard of another person spending $10,000 to save their kid’s dog. Sigh. But that’s another thread for another day.

This is a five-vet – no, a six-vet clinic. I just noticed yesterday a new name row added on their hanging sign out front. I’ve been going there for about 20 years. Wonderful, caring folks, and affordable without compromising the work. The basic office call fee is $35 when you go in for some reason. I believe spaying is $75, haven’t done it in a while. I do remember when I took the three orphaned kittens in the day after I acquired them for a checkup, they decided that all three of those little tidbits collectively counted as one cat, so they just charged one office call of $35.

I believe the highest bill ever from them was around $700, and that was over a few appointments. That was when we were trying to diagnose and figure out Tenuto, sigh. We never got an exact answer while trying to work her up, and I called end game because the cat just was obviously not happy anymore. After PTS at that last appointment, the vet took her back and did a quickie necropsy free of charge just because this was bothering them as much as me. She had a wicked-looking tumor deep at the back of her throat/upper esophagus. Obviously malignant. There was nothing we could have done. But it did help to know that.

That is a wonderful practice to have. You are so lucky.

Come July will she agree to pose for a Feline Independence Day photo with your flag, I wonder?

I’ll try. The flagpole bed is doing really well this year. For some reason, my flagpole bed seems to alternate good years. It’s done in annuals, so there shouldn’t be a pattern, but one year is really nice, the next year wimpy, the next nice, etc. It was struggling last year, great this year. Probably will be lousy next year. But I’ll try to get a picture on the 4th with her.

ETA: Flag Day 2023 picture. No cat, sorry.
