Cavallo VS Konig VS DeNiro boots - fit, comfort, longevity?
Just got a pair of Cavallos with zippers, love them, easy to break in. Also have a pair of Petries, without zippers, have not broken them in yet, much stiffer, have had them a couple of years, sitting in the closet. :(
I had a pair of Petries like that and then gained some weight. I was looking at full custom boots to replace them, but before I did that, I took them to the cobbler. He put zippers and a gusset in and now I get to ride in my own boots again. When I ride nobody can see the gusset or the zippers and I only paid about $80 for all the work.

I have many friends that have purchased De Niro boots over the past couple of years. Some of them have multiple pairs - a show boot, a clinic boot, a barn boot, etc. At least one person has several pairs of show boots - a blue pair and a black pair, to match her shadbelly and short coat.

The overall consensus seems to be that you can’t beat the comfort, or the good looks, but to not expect a lot of longevity. They tend to break down around the ankles, and the brushed leather in particular gets rubs and abrasions very easily, that do not buff out.

The fit can also be tricky - most of the people I know have used a master fitter, but for some, their boots did not fit at all when they arrived and had to be sent back. And lead times for customs can be quite lengthy, esp. since the boots are handmade in Italy. One person waited over five months (and hers didn’t fit). It is my understanding that the De Niros have become so popular, that the factory in Italy was overwhelmed trying to keep up with orders.

The upside is that the leather quality and workmanship are usually very, very good, and since the De Niros are fully customizable, you can pretty much design exactly what you want - the choices for style, leather type, color, trim, bling, etc., are mind-boggling. I have seen some stunningly gorgeous boots at some of their trunk shows.

Cavallo and Koenigs are the best IMO. I have had Koenigs Grandgester all my live. If you care for them well, they will last forever…

I had a pair of Konigs that I hated…I tried for a year to break them in and finally gave them to a student…she hates them but can’t afford a better boot at this time so tolerates them and just wears them showing. I have a large foot and skinny ankle/leg so went custom.

Thanks for the input everyone - sounds like DeNiro is out :frowning:

I’m getting a lot of people that say Konig is quite hard to break in, so I’m thinking it’s going to be Cavallo.

Now the difficult question of how to pick which model and what options I want… Suggestions??

I love the Piaffe Plus. I have had several pairs of them, for schooling and for show. They have held up great, still polish up beautifully and the zippers are still sound. Break in time is not torturous!

I have a pair in navy that I was saving to show in, but I like them so much I will probably break them in and enjoy them now.
