Cavalor and Purina Feed

Ah you are right. I can’t line up a direct match with any of the products. No wonder international competitors want something that’s identical in every market.

We have Cavalor supplements here. Stupidly expensive, like a gastro supplement on a daily $$ par with Gastropell (omeprazole @ $15/day). If I’m paying that money for a gastric aid, I’m going with a real one. Same with their calming supplement.

They sent me a swag bag for my new OTTB, including socks and a hat. But they won’t be getting any money for their waaaaaaay overpriced shtick.

I feed Purina’s new Enrich Plus Senior and I am so happy with it! I used the regular Enrich Plus prior to that and loved that too. Only switched to the new Enrich Plus Senior because my mare is 16 years old. She LOVES it. It also has Outlast and ActivAge prebiotic in it. Did not have luck with Tribute Essential K or Kalm n EZ… runny manure when on Essential K, coat and hooves did not look great, either.

Cavalor seem really overpriced. Looks yummy but don’t know many people who can afford it. Also not sure its certified in Canada- that could just mean packaging issues.

Purina is different than USA. The main one that i have seen so far is the Digestive balance is suppose to be the same as the USA Outlast which everyone was super excited to try. Pretty similar but Canadian version has soy in it which turned a bunch of people off.

We have brought it some of the Purina line in at work (feed store). The Pur Athlete (25% fat) has been our best seller and worked better than the Step 8 or Fat smart on a couple different horses.

I’m at a Cavalor barn and not every horse gets their needs met with the ones we tend to stock (ActionMix, FiberForce, Struco Sr). Up until this year (when we started doing more 3rd level work and really focusing on conditioning), my mare was doing really well on 2 qt of ActionMix a day, which is under the recommended, but she’s an easy keeper and on full pasture; we doubled it to 4qt this summer to help her with her energy levels and muscle development. Most folks don’t use Cavalor supplements though, like people have said, they’re pricey! I don’t know if I’d stick with Cavalor necessarily if it wasn’t included in board, I’d probably overanalyze things and who knows where I would end up.

The cavalor grooming products are nice though

My impression was the Cavalor feeds aren’t fortified and they don’t give any readings for things like copper and zinc on the guaranteed analysis.

I always feed a loose mineral/grass balancer since the bulk of her calories come from forage. I think all of the horses are on a vitamin/mineral supplement

Ah, that’s good! Most feeds these days are fortified, but then you have to feed the recommended amount to get all the vitamins and minerals, like 5 lbs a day. A good VMS means you can feed as much or as little of the bagged feeds as you want. I just feed beet pulp and alfalfa cubes plus VMS. Apart from calories, I don’t see the point in a bagged feed that isn’t fortified.

Cavalor looks pretty and tasty and may be reasonably low starch for a feed that contains actual oats and barley and corn (some of the mixes) but it seems way overpriced, like a gourmet COB sweet feed. Now I fed sweet feed once upon a time (circa 1975) and the horses loved it, but it isn’t the best choice these days IMHO.

I had no idea!

That sounds like it would be good for any age? I have 2 older & 1 younger on Enrich plus. How does the price differ from the regular Enrich? I will have to ask my feed dealer if they can order it.

They only stock certain things and special order anything else needed.
