Chapter 3, Dogless

What a gorgeous dog (the dam). Wow!

Please note that I did not recommend these dogs to the OP but was suggesting that there are dogs out there.

You all have your opinions on what would work best…but only OP knows and she can do her research.
No one is making decisions for her.

Fair enough, but I don’t think anyone has said there are no dogs out there?

Please note that I did not suggest that there are no dogs out there. I am suggesting that there are less arduous avenues than adoption through rescues.

Although I am certain beyond measure that you know what is best for OP, I also reserve the opportunity in a public forum to suggest options that you may not agree with.

OP, I know you are in Canada, but have you heard of Dan and Ronnie’s Rescue? They are in South Carolina. There is even a docu on Netfilx called Life In The Dog House.

https://dannyronsrescue.org/ Most of their dogs live in the house with them and they know them inside and out. This may be helpful to you. You will have to go to them to adopt, but they are good folks and road trips are fun! And they are horse people!

I have a Podenco from GDS. I regularly support them financially. Imho, the Pods are more energetic. The galgos can be like greyhounds: couch potatoes, though not always. I adore my pod, but even at 14, I’m hesitant to trust her off leash. I do let her off leash in the front yard and her recall is much better than it was, these are hunting dogs and recall is not always their strong suit. I have seen some that excel in agility, in that running thing, canicross?

They are the sweetest dogs and very loyal and friendly. Mine is a dominant female and will not tolerate another dominant dog. She does tolerate my very submissive toy Aussie. I tried to adopt a second pod, and that didn’t work. However, my girl loves all people and greets everyone with joy.

So while I love gds, and the dogs are wonderful, the right one may be a good match, but not all of them would be the right one. In any case, I would lean towards a galgo rather than a podenco.

Edit to add: if @Cat_Tap wanted a trip to Spain to meet the dogs, I think that would be a great adventure!! I know they currently have an enormous dog, Tiny, of probably some LGD heritage…And some others as well. What fun!!

Two of the Pods that I know are probably mixed. They both have ears that fold over instead of sticking straight up, but otherwise they have a typical Podenco appearance and were adopted from a GDS partner in the US. It is my understanding that these dogs are often abandoned, and it could be as street dogs that they breed with other dogs. Both are only dogs, kept on leashes and fenced yards anyway though.

Cursing you right now, and sitting on my hands so I don’t ask you for their contact info!

A dog pulled out of a Mexican shelter, listed on Craigslist. Legit!

Mexico is where a lot of the rescues in Southern California get their dogs from. That’s where mine came from. Just because the rescue is in Canada doesn’t mean they don’t obtain dogs the same way, or maybe his original owners moved to the area. While Craigslist has fallen out of favor for advertising, that rescue seems to be using it still to try and find homes for their dogs. What is not “legit” about it?

Yes. Thank you for your support. I’m certain that all dogs in Mexico are involved in drug cartels and are not good family companions. Your input is beyond valuable.

That we have a woman who needs a SPECIFIC type of dog, and we’re looking at dogs that may or may not have grown up on the streets of Mexico with absolutely unknown temperaments.

Huskies are not for the faint of heart. That’s a breed that I would NOT recommend for op. Same if that thing is a shepherd cross.

Beagles that hunt aren’t going to be able to off leash on the farm the way she wants to.

And a “bulldog” who needs vaccines (ie, was not cared for, may have lots of other health issues).

If I were to go looking for random dogs on the internet to suggest to someone with specific needs, these would firmly NOT be the ones.

At least no one has suggested a Malinois!

I wasn’t commenting on the dogs in the other ads or whether they were appropriate choices for this particular person to adopt. I was responding to your comment that a dog from Mexico advertised on Craigslist wasn’t “legit”. It came across like you thought it was a scam of some kind and in my opinion and experience it’s entirely possible for a dog from Mexico to be in a rescue group being offered for adoption.

Furthermore, did you even read the ad? “delightful, well mannered, sociable family dog who is great with children and other pets. Two years of age, neutered and up-to-date on all vaccinations, Pedro is great on or off leash, has excellent recall and is a quick learner. We are seeking a Canadian family for this boy who, themselves, are looking for a loyal, gentle, canine companion in need of a home to call his own”. Certainly sounds like a nice dog to me.

Danny and Ron are truly great people - horsemen and dog lovers, and they do an incredible job with their rescue, but I think (please correct me if I am wrong) that they do not adopt out of the country.

Amen to all of this. Feral dogs off the streets of Mexico from Craigslist? Difficult breeds that are high energy that daunt even marathon runners for how much energy they need to burn off?

A local rescue just brought up a shipment of chihuahua mixes from South Carolina and some other family breed mixes. What’s wrong with those types of dogs?

I think rescues are much less crazy than they used to be. Many are struggling to find fosters and adopters. With a dog in foster, you even know more of what you’re getting.

Sorry OP to derail, but I don’t see why some people think you’re not really rescuing a dog if the dog is small or has a quiet temperament or is a family-friendly breed. They needs homes too and a suitable match is the best for owner and dog.

That’s the one that I said might work, if you’d read my post…

The rest of them are a hell no.

I did not see it anywhere that they only adopt to US residents. They go to Wellie to adopt out dogs and there are plenty of Candians and other nations there showing. But I could be wrong.

I know they do not arrange shipping for the dogs and you have to make an appointment and go in person to see their dogs.
