"Cheap" run in shed options

I priced out materials to build our sheds. They were all 12x36.

6 6x6 posts in the ground. Framed out w/ 2x6’s. 5’ kickwall made of 2x12x12s. Tin shell and roof. Materials were $1400 and labor for someone else to install was $1000 (friends construction crew).

You may be able to build a permanent one that you won’t have to worry about colts eating apart (!) for around $700 if you can build yourself. 2 colts surely wouldn’t need a 12x36. Maybe a 12x20 if they are realllly friendly!

If you know any contractor friends- I’m sure they would be willing to help out squaring the building and such for pizza and beer!

Good luck!

Lots of great ideas everyone, thanks! Meredith might just be my hero though, we’ll see.

This is the little barn (10 x 16) that we built (still needs a bit of work to be winterized, but perfect for summer)

We used (not including the divider wall, and front that is not needed for a run-in)
6 = 6x6 posts (3 10’ + 3 8’ tall)
9 = 2x10 x 10’ boards for each end/side
10 = 2x10 x 8’ boards for the back
6 = 2x10 x 8’ boards for the top and bottom of the front
4 = 2x4 x 12’ for the inside diagonal braces
12 = 2x4 x 12’ boards for the roof supports (+ the hangers)
6 sheets of waffle board
2 or 3 rolls of roofing

This is free standing, and the only thing we needed to cut was for the finish diagonal braces. (Could have bought them a bit shorter and not needed a saw at all)

It went together like a puzzle, just off the truck in about 6 to 8 hours.

I have a side piece not in place to keep horses out of it until we get it fenced. The high gaps in the wall, I love for summer, and can be plugged with tapped in 2x2s in the winter. It still needs the top of the sides finished for winter, but I am thinking of using heavy road fabric instead of wood to block most of the weather, but still let some air thru.

Less than $800

<We built it last June, so it did hold up well to all of those blizzards last winter.> :dead:

These guys out of Vermont helped us out. They were easy to work with and shipped fast. Pricing was cheap. I was surprised of how heavy and rugged the shed was when we assembled it. They gave us a discount as a non profit which was very much appreciated and another one for purchasing two identical units. www.JamaicaCottageShop.com
