Cheap source for rawhide chews?

Does anyone use antlers for their dogs? I’ve heard that they are FABULOUS for heavy chewers, but they are $$$$ at my local pet place, so I’ve never tried them out.

I do get the raw frozen bison shank bones for my dogs–they’re always a big hit and they last forever!

Any ideas on kong stuffing to give a dog who is on a grain free, fish protein diet only??

Maybe puree some veggies then smoosh them in the kong and freeze it?
Peanut butter can be an allergen for some dogs. PB in Kongs is overrated. I refuse to pay $$$ for Kong-branded fillings.

My grain-free, fishy-diet dog gets a kong with baby food poured inside and frozen. No chopping or pureeing required: just pour it in! Green peas, carrots, sweet potatoes, anything grain- and protein-free.

Many fish-based diets use potato. Yogurt has also not caused problems.

I got one a couple weeks ago for my dog. Its an “I’m gone only” treat, but she enjoys it and really hasn’t made much of a dent in it (there are teeth marks and I’ve watched her chew on camera, but the size is the same). Now, she’s not a real heavy chewer, but she does like chewing sometimes.

Has anyone heard of/use churpi chews? That was another longer lasting chew the pet store recommended (though I don’t think it would last a super chewer long). My dog really loves that as well, though she’s made somewhat of a dent in that. Not cheap though.

My BC is allergic to PB, as we discovered during the Kong adventures.

OK, swing and miss with Nylabones . The BC chewed for a little bit, the Kelpie took it, ran to his chew spot, then came back and gave me the “you’re kidding, right?” face. UGH! They are even chicken flavored, though I gave it a couple licks and didn’t taste any chicken flavor.

The Kongs are a no-go unless I get the super Kongs (black). And so’s peanut butter, the BC is allergic. Not sure what else I can put in there other than PB or the expensive treats they sell with the Kongs.

Will give nylabones a shot!
I use a mix of grated cheese, soft cheese and their dry food. They love it!

You don’t worry about the cheese stopping them up?

Another thumbs up for the antler…I have a Bull Terrier and Cattle dog x (aka Demolition Crew) and I ended up going for the antlers for them since I was tired of watching them eat the heads off of nyla bones (thaats nice and dangerous). WOWZA do they work…but they were pricy. I got them on sale at about 25 bucks a piece. They try to fashion them into weaponry at the tips every few weeks but nothing the ol’ nail drimmel can’t fix. (You know, that nail drimmel we all have laying around our house that we bought to use on the dogs toes, but theyre damn terrified of it and it doesn’t really work that great anyway…now its been put back into use too.)

I’ve heard great things about antlers too but can’t seem to shell out the money for them. My bf’s dad gave me a huge bucket of them from the deer he’s shot over the years. My bf just needs to cut them up in smaller pieces for the dogs and round out some of the points lol.

In the meantime the dogs are enjoying their nylabones

I’m an antler lover! My dogs don’t get rawhide or nylabones (I don’t want them chewing off pieces and eating it). They can be fairly expensive but def last awhile. I do take them away when they get to be only be about 2" long… I’m afraid they’ll swallow them whole on accident at that point. I usually get them at the pet store, but I have been searching for cheaper options online… I wish I knew someone who hunted lol.

Anyone else have a dog who likes to turn their nylabones into weapons?? My guy will chew it into a very sharp point then casually leave them in areas of frequent foot traffic. One time he managed to get one stuck in the carpet, pointy side up! It would have pierced my foot if I stepped on it!!
Our pit bull will do that. We tell everyone her story (from a kill shelter) and say she’s sharpening her shank in case she has to go back to jail one day  (which she never will.)

LMAO! I thought I was the only one who had a dog-eating nail dremmel!

I go to the frozen meat section of the grocery store and buy a pack of marrow bones and give them to my dogs frozen and raw. They LOVE them, they gnaw on them for days, they dont splinter or break and they are CHEAP. These are the only things my holistic vet suggests for safe healthy chewing.

The only thing is that they are for outdoor chewing only. They get a bit slimy when they thaw and you dont want that on your carpeting.

They are white so easy to find on the lawn…you dont want to run over them with a mower! Once a week or so I throw the old ones away and give them each a fresh one. My two girls love each other and share toys and even food…but not these bones! They love em.

Pst… you can find antlers on Ebay for great prices  My dogs think they’re the best things ever.

Diffuse, I really wish I’d seen your post about 10 days ago! I broke down and bought a nice antler chunk from my local pet store. Expensive at about $35, but figured Koa would enjoy something new to chew on.

She won’t TOUCH it. She sniffed it a little bit in the beginning. I don’t think she’s even put her mouth on it once.

Sigh.

I respect all the warnings about rawhides. However, I began giving them to my first labby, she had fantastic teeth as a result, and her daughter and granddaughter learned how to chew them carefully by example. Each had one each morning after breakfast. I monitored them to make sure they were being chewed thoroughly. I only gave them the rawhides that were singles, not ropes or knots or doubled over. Although my vets would wince when they asked why their teeth were so good, they’d shrug their shoulders and agree they couldn’t argue with the results. I bought them regularly at BJs.

Bumping this up with a question. What about pig ears?

stay away from pigs ears etc.

Pigs ears and other processed “chewies” can be very dangerous to not only your dog but to you.

At the urging of our vet who knows a whole lot more about this topic than the rescue with which I volunteer, our dogs no longer get any processed chewies. More and more cases of salmonella and similar bacterial illnesses are being linked to processed chewies.

Here is a link to one of many reports on this:

I have nothing to add, I just wanted to point this out and chuckle. I do the same thing!!! tee hee

Nylabones aren’t digestible and cause dangerous gut impactions just like rawhides. And many dogs won’t touch them (thankfully), I mean really, chewing up and swallowing bits of plastic? how is that a good idea?

re: kongs. You can feed your dog meals out of them- mix a bit of canned food or other binder with the kibble, stuff it in there, and freeze.
