Chestnut foal 4 white feet, don’t see clear socks.

Ok, I see the type of mottling you are seeing now. Do you have a more full body picture? Trying to get better perspective.

@Justice I looked at your pics and they look like a perfectly normal chestnut foal shed to me. The coat underneath always looks much darker than the foal coat that’s falling out. Same thing re: that mottled look.

It’s as if the foal coat hair is dead and the color leeches out of it before it finally comes off. I would say that it’s bleached–which it is–but I often see the same color loss with hair that isn’t exposed to the sun–like the insides of hind legs.

Your colt is adorable. Color-wise, this just doesn’t look like anything out of the ordinary to me. I wish I knew how to post pics here, because I have plenty of foal pictures that look like that.

Farrier came today and said he’d never seen a chestnut shed quite like that. Not the shedding pattern, just the different colors. Unless he is shedding to bald underneath and it’s just skin showing through, it is looking like his chest and parts of his legs are greyish brown. The rest of him is chestnut just like mom, except for the bottom half of his tail which is grey. The tone on his chest and legs is similar to the bottom of the tail, more ash, less red. The more he sheds, the clearer the difference is. My understanding is that particularly with chestnuts, their first shed can be different from later ones. It’s fun to watch!

Any chance you can get some full body shots, in good (but not too direct/bright) light? I agree the leg pics do look different.

I tried this morning but did video by accident, will do this afternoon! Thanks

Photo up!

Ok, see![](ng the new pics, I see normal/typical foal shedding, and not just for chestnut.

Here’s my very dark brown foal when he was a bit farther along in the shedding process than yours is

Got it! So was the hair coming in different colors? It looks the same. I had three bays and have never seen this. I think I am just not used to chestnuts. I just expected to see bright chestnut like is on his face and body.

It’s a combination of that foal hair that bleaches very badly, and unevenly, and looking even worse when it’s getting ready to shed, and the new coat coming in much richer and darker, and in a very moth-eaten look that really doesn’t happen to their coats after this.

The inner legs are especially light to begin with, and bleach on top of that, and tends to look darker on the first shed than even on the face sometimes since the body hairs are also in the sun and starting to bleach just a little as they are coming in.

Thank you!!!

Update at last! His feet are now white on the bottom and black on top with the exception of one tiny stripe, we had to clip his legs to see if there was a white mark there for the inspection (there’s not). So his foal feet were white and are just growing out. Are all chestnuts like that? I don’t know, as he’s my first one and my bays were not like that, but I am ridiculously relieved about those dark feet  the hair grew in on his legs a normal shade, and he is a handsome handful. Updated pics on my fb page… thank you everyone who told me it would turn out ok!

Just now looked at the pics. He is so cute! I love the facial markings. He looks sassy. In a cute way.

Thank you! He is very sassy… his poor mother!
