Same parts (except for cosmetics) out of the same plant:

I really have no idea why the mechanics said the Chevy was “better”, I’m just saying that that was what they always said. The only specific that I remember was that the GMC’s would have more rattles after being driven on all our gravel roads. And that would have been for 30 years worth of trucks, not just new ones.
Quick glance at truck guy stuff indicates that the difference is options and dealership issues now.
talking 1500’s, my truck in college was a Chevy silverado 2005. It was the EXACT SAME as my husbands 1500 GMC Sierra. Literally buttons, seat design, exterior etc.
Current generations have different sheet metal for “visual brand identity”, but…

Interesting. I’ve heard of this before. Any recommendations for “quick and dirty” reading to explain the basics?

This doesn’t directly cover it, but it discusses the irrational behavior of people in the face of pricing options.

Hahneman and Ariely have both very interesting and enlightening work in the subject.
Ariely did a number of great Ted talks too:

Thank you!!!

I have had both the extended cab and crew cab. I love my crew cab. I can put more stuff on the back seat, I can fit a medium sized dog crate in there and get it through the door. I can fit 3 average sized adults in the back seat if needed. I have a dressing room but I went to a weekend clinic with a barnmate so we had a big cooler and 2 suitcases plus my fairly extensive tool box that I carry in the truck. Would it have fit in my extended cab, sure but it would have been tight.
I have the 6.5 foot bed rather than the long bed but I have an bed extender that I used when hauling 8 foot sheets of plywood/drywall and when getting hay. I have this one: http://www.autotrucktoys.com/chevy_silverado/GM-OEM-Chevy-Silverado-Bed-Extender-PRD4219.aspx
If I had to get a new one I would get this style with the more squared off corners. http://lewisvilleautoplexblog.com/tag/truck-bed-extender-lewisville-texas/
I can get about 35 to 40 bales (50 pound bales) on my truck without any trouble with the extender down. I probably could get more if I wanted to stack higher.
I prefer the bedliner to the spray in. The reason is we have a truck bed cargo unloader. This one: http://www.harborfreight.com/truck-bed-cargo-unloader-60800.html. I don’t think it would work as well on the rough spray in liners. It slides nicely across the bedliner. I use this for mulch, small loads of gravel, manure for the garden/lawn etc… There are more robust ones for about $170 but the $45 one works for what I need.
Mine is have all been Chevy’s. The current one has 107,000 miles on it and is going strong.
So…update… did a bunch of online/phone call shopping for a new truck. Of course, what I want is sort of the “unicorn of trucks” as one dealership called it. I found one in my area, and several a 7 hour drive (one way) away. Best deal was local–though, let’s be honest here, a $50K+ truck is never a “bargain”!
We ended up getting a bit more truck package-wise than I’d wanted, but got a good price on it in the end (lots of rebates on this model/style vs. my intended stripped down model). They are going to deliver it to my house by Wednesday! Woot! And gulp–what a monster payment.
Congrats on the new truck!
I am not thrilled with the color (Tungsten Metallic–dark gray), but I can live with it. It will take me a month to figure out all the damn buttons on the dash! Good golly, like the bridge of an ocean liner it is. I test drove a short bed version (who orders/buys one of those??) and it was so quiet and responsive! Crazy it’s a big truck–smooth, silent, powerful. Of course, Dear Mr. CC wanted to take the Corvette out for a test drive. Yeah…no…same price, totally different purpose!
