Chia Seed for horses

I know a few people who feed their horses Chia seeds and like them as much if not more then Flax etc.

I feed Chia primarily as a psyllium replacement to move sand through. My horses coat looks great too. I buy the bags from Cosco.

If you have a horse that is prone to choke, you should soak it first. It will expand and become a gelatinous mess, but if you add it to some other feed, that could work. (I know this because I had a choke-prone horse that did have an episode after un-soaked chia seed.)

Just sprinkle chia seeds on your pelleted feed. Then it won’t stick to the roof of the horse’s mouth as badly as if you feed it alone. You don’t need a large amount of seeds at each feeding. And it has more omega 3 and less omega 6 than some other products.

Is there an opinion on chia vs flax vs ? For the most economical way to provide omega 3? Wanting to start my IAD guy on something as recommended by my vet for its help in controlling allergy like symptoms.

Chia is much more expensive than flax. I buy Flax by the 50 lb bag at my feed store. I know you can feed less chia, but I’d still go with flax.

Here is a link for 25lbs. It says 1 pcs per case. Not sure how many in the case.
