She’s right chia seeds do have a lot more benefits…
Of course a site that sells chis is going to claim superiority, so never automatically trust them.
They say chia is 3:1 Omega 3:Omega 6, and that’s right. But they also claim it’s the highest, and that’s wrong - flax is 4:1.
If you get into the nitty gritty, chia’s benefits are the makeup of the Omega 3 EFAs, which is better than flax. It’s a bit higher in several nutrients as well, but given the relatively small amount fed, pretty insignificant differences. The differences are bigger for human nutrition.
Their chia seed is $92.50 for 25lbs!
I also buy and use psyllium husks when smartpak has them on sale, in the 50 pound containers of Equi-Aid.
After 3 yrs of using whole flax, and stabilized flax seeds, I switched to chia seeds after reading about them on CoTH thread about colic. I googled chia seeds and did not read any of the sales articles but instead read the articles about how chia seeds were used by Native Americans, etc. Sold me on them. Then I priced chia everywhere and found getchia on Ebay. Now I buy 12 or 24 of the 3 pound bags at a time, human grade at good prices. But use whatever you want to use. I learned by experience what is best for my horses. The psyllium I’ve used for many years living in coastal sand country with horses. Chia everyday, psyllium fiber at least 7 days a month is a lot cheaper than fluids at the vet’s.
My horse won’t touch psyllium so chia is my only option for “sand clearing”. I give 1/4 cup a day for sand clearing as well as the overall skin and coat benefits.
I believe HorseTech has a chia bucket and they will ship to Canada. The price makes me :eek: when compared to flax.
What is the current best medical advice on how effective psyllium really is for clearing sand out of the intestine?
