Thank you for the feedback. It appears that soaked to mashed potato if they will eat it is the norm. Just throwing water on the feed but not letting it break down is not the norm.
I have one on pellets (Bar Ale Esteem Complete - I’m in CA) and she has massive melanomas in her mouth, which makes her also a chronic choker. I used to wet the pellets and immediately feed them, but she even choked on that. Now I soak them all day or overnight (I make up grain right after I feed the previous meal) AND add warm water right before I feed. It’s a good bran mash consistency when I feed it. So far so good!
This is also how my old lady gets fed since she had an episode last winter. She gets Kalm N Ez.
We have one that can choke easily. He gets regular pelleted grain in a slow feed pan on the ground. It’s called a Grad-Dual Feeder by Burlingham Sports and Smartpak has them.
I have fed soaked pellets to almost toothless seniors for years. My gauge for determining how wet to make it is: If I would need a drink to wash down a mouthful of food at the same consistency…then it’s too dry!
