Choosing successor to perfect dog: breed recommendations?

Thanks everyone - and thanks for the discussion! She doesn’t have a name yet - it always takes me some time, and if I named her now it would be Squeakasaurus Rex or Rampaging Waterbuffalo - so yeah, Bluey, Trouble. An absolute riot of trouble, in all senses of the word.

ETA but she came to the office for the first time yesterday and was nothing short of perfect! Not that I didn’t pay the price in rampaging waterbuffalo-ing afterward, but never mind that - I’ve got band aids!

Just keep telling yourself, “they do grow up”.
They do.
Enjoy her wildness now.

She sounds like she will make that great adult dog you are wanting.
She is also a beauty, what a pretty puppy.

If aloof is a requirement then this is NOT the breed but one worth considering IMO would be the Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog (yes they are different than the Australian Cattle Dog).

My experience is that they are smart enough to be quick and easy to train but not so smart that they look for ways of getting in trouble. They are extremely loyal so you will never lose them off leash (only time I thought I lost mine was when he was sitting directly behind me just out of my line of site).

He is easy to bring into the office and other public places because he is shy with strangers so is never going to jump all over them or be a pest but is friendly if people stop to visit with him.

Mine might be the exception to the rule but he has never shown any inclination to chase horses, or other small animals. The only challenge was that it took him a bit to figure out the acceptable distance to follow on a trail ride because he would stay so close that if I did a down transition and he wasn’t paying attention he would literally run into the horse’s hind leg (thankfully I have patient horses).

They are a little smaller than specified (30 - 55lbs) however I have found that a handy size because my guy at about 35lbs is big enough to head out for any length run or hike but is small enough to pick up and move around if needed.

She’s ADORABLE! I was thinking that a PWD sounded perfect! I am a terrier person, but I have a Scottie and a Lakeland, and am not such a big JRT fan. I would love one bigger dog though, and would have suggested, in order of size, considering an Airedale, Giant Schnauzer, or Black Russian Terrier. Black Russians are HUGE. I really thought a GS was on my list as my next dog, but I’m thinking of a 'dale instead. They were developed by crossing Terrier with Otter Hound, and from my research seem to make great farm dogs.

But, my biggest problem is that I love too many breeds!

Enjoy your girl, she is beautiful!!

awwww, Sugarwells, but maybe someone else will read this thread - it’s really been a great discussion, and I know I did a search and read lots of dog breed threads before posting.

The pup - Sandpiper - is just wonderful. Still wild sometimes but smart, happy to help with stalls (mmm hmmm) and hoof trimming management (mmm hmmm) without adverse effects (YES!). She’s such a perfect office dog that when I open her crate she just sort of flops her top half out of it rather than leaving. And now I’ll let everyone else’s productivity get back to normal - mine has definitely tanked unless you count pup socialization.
