Chronic ear yeast infections...why....

Some breeds with long floppy ears are just more prone to issues-- beagles and bassetts especially.

Ear Issues

I foster for a local rescue group. Many of my foster dogs are hounds. Most of them have ear issues. I feed Wellness Core and Blue Buffalo Wilderness which is also a no-grain formula.

I have been the route with repeated trips to the vet with my foster dogs. And I’ve done the repeated rounds of various medications with the result that the ears stay damp and the problem remains. The dogs were miserable and their ears looked awful.

After researching online, I now use Equate personal hygiene pads to clean the gunk out of their ears. This product is the right size and moist. The active ingredient is witch hazel which is an astringent that helps dry the ear.

Then I use Excel 8 in 1 ear powder or their 3 in 1 ear powder - you can buy this from Amazon. It has Iodoform in it. It does not have the most pleasant smell. But doing this two or three times a week will resolve the problem. It may take a few weeks, but the relief to the dog is almost immediately. They quit try digging out the inside of their ears.

I hesitated to even post this as I am sure someone will have reasons why my routine is abusive and potentially lethal. But it works for the dogs I foster. The drops and ointments from the vet seemed to only keep the ear problem going.

Good luck to the original poster and her friend.

I’m very surprised no one has posted this yet; chronic yeast infections can be caused by … well, yeast in the diet! My Husky gets a bad ear infection when I feed her any food with brewers yeast in it. If you read the ingredients, a LOT of food has brewers yeast in it. Also, the ones with “egg product” can aggravate the ears. Mine are currently on the Wellness Core, and doing well. Just got a Chihuahua from a rescue, and her eyes are a little watery, so hoping the Core works for that too. The LID diets normally don’t have the brewer’s yeast. Good luck!
