Me too. Mine is that equids’ ability to dig through snow for fodder and break ice for water saved us all – the delicious proto-domestic species as well as early humans – through a number of ice ages.
Lots of modern ungulates will stand on five inches of snow and starve; I’m guessing at least some of their ancestors were similarly inclined.
