Cobra Braids
DO NOT DO THIS FOR A RATED SHOW! YOU CAN’T HAVE METAL IN YOUR HORSE’S MANE! Use waxed thread or yarn instead.
Where do you see that? I can only find it as pertaining to tails. From DR121 Saddlery and Equipment, Section 7

Each bit must be attached to a separate rein and reins may only be attached to bits. Any decoration of the horse with extravagant items, such as ribbons or flowers, etc. in the mane, tail, etc., is strictly forbidden. Braiding of the horse’s mane and tail, however, is permitted. False tails are permitted and if used may not contain any metal parts. BOD 6/1/14 Effective Immediately.BOD 9/30/14 Effective Immediately

You can use bobby pins. Good idea.

Thick mane is what my mare specialises in. I swear she’s an Italian girl trapped in a horse’s body…

BUMPING this old thread back up… I had a show last weekend and did the ‘cobra’/button braids… I think they came out better than my original attempt (up thread) but I think I still need some pointers on what I’m not quite doing right. I still can’t get them to have that ‘hooded’ look. I tried braiding going up (towards the sky) and leaving the first few passes very loose.

How long are the manes? My guy’s mane is at least 4.75-5 inches, and very thick - I did not pull his mane at all.
How many is a good number? IIRC, I divided/banded up the mane first and had 8 or 9 braids.
Frays and flyaways - do we use a product to tamp them down? I just used water.

I stupidly did not take any before the show which I am kicking myself for… Mid-stadium round I watched one slowly unfurl  Whoops!

Here’s a snap from the show, sorry it’s in action and not a still shot:
