Coffin Bone Bruises??

Yikes! That sounds awful. Glad your mare came around though and is back to work!

So far all the xrays we have taken are normal.

Update: we found a core lesion in the SDF today. Somehow it was missed on MRI. 😫😭

Good to hear. Now you know.

Rim pads are not complicated, no need to research brands and designs. Farriers usually carry them on the truck. Mine cut his own out thick leather. They just go between the top of the shoe and the hoof wall. Nothing over the sole, like a donut. Not expensive.

Whether you go to them or whatever or barefoot, this is one case where NSAIDs are appropriate. Thats what they are for, reducing inflammation. Bute is actually very good in a case like this, he’s not going to need it for long and it is an exceptionally good anti inflammatory when administered properly in proper doses. Long term, Equioxx is a great choice.

Just remember not to rush to get him back to work and rehab is S.L.O.W. with vet consults and imaging periodically to monitor progress or lack thereof to avoid reinjury.

Sorry to hear this.

I had a 5 year old gelding who was diagnosed with a coffin bone bruise via MRI. We treated with Osphos, put him in bar shoes and placed him on stall rest for 60 days. During that time he was tack walked and placed in a small medical turnout daily. We also purchased him a pair of Soft Ride boots to wear while stalled. He went back to work with no issues and has been great since. Best of luck while your kid recovers!

I bought a horse in April, and the only concern the vet had on the PPE was his bad shoeing. Two days later he came up 3/5 lame. Did coffin joint injections and eventually an MRI. It showed a coffin bone bruise resulting from long term bad shoeing (-2mm Palmer angles), and the vets said it was really bad luck that it showed up when it did. His shoeing has been corrected and in early August we did Prostride and Tilden. He has been getting hand walked for months and is now intermittently sound when jogged. He is headed to a rehab place for 60-90 days where he will do a water treadmill among other things. Our vet is cautiously optimistic about his prognosis.
ETA: This is a 16 year old horse. We also did a course of bute at the beginning and he is now on Equioxx; he also gets Adequan and Legend. He has stayed quiet with just hand walking. 💛
