I’ve been riding in my Carharrt overalls and puffy down coat the last couple of days. Every time I get on my horse a piece of George Morris dies.[/QUOTE]

Oh, I LOVE that!!

I don’t really have a hard limit in terms of temp. If it’s below -10C, I’m not going to ask for much beyond walking (no indoor. No outdoor, for that matter). I ride outside and ride “out” for 90% of my rides because of my boarding situation, and my mare lives outside most of the time, so we’re both used to it. This past Sunday it was -30 with the windchill, but it was actually a beautiful sunny day with very little wind so a few other boarders and I hoofed it out into the sheltered woods for about an hour and a half hack. It was lovely, probably closer to -10 in the woods with no wind and the sun shining down through where the trail is. Mostly walking, a nice little group trot on a flat portion of the trail.

The real challenge is cooling out in this weather. You need to be willing to spend the extra 30-60 mins after your ride to make sure the horse is in a good place. Mare was sweaty after our hack on the weekend, and it took some toweling and a good chunk of time with the cooler on before she was totally dry again. We hung out in her stall together and played pretty pony while she munched hay and drank her nice warm water til she was dry. Then, blanket on and out she went to stick her head fully in the roundbale and boss her friends around.

If it’s a nasty, windy, damp cold day then mare gets a pat on the nose and a carrot and I drink coffee inside the warm house with my BO
