A well done braid job in colors can be stunning! Plus it’s nice to see people having some fun with it :).

From the HITS FB page. Obviously for 4th July. There’s this one too, which is slightly overboard to me.[/QUOTE]
OMG, that picture is of my pony Deno (IBA Blue Diamond) He was beautifully turned out for HITS Culpeper and the braided did a fantastic job.
Can’t get on board with the poms… but I could definitely get on board with sparkly yarn!!!
I braided for a barn that had a lot of pony kids and they always wanted a pom-pom. We’d do one as a lucky braid and three tiny ones in the tail if the pony had a nice tail (or a wig.)
Over fourth of July I’d always do at least one red, one white, and one blue braid. My first horse was a very dark bay without a single white hair, a well-put-together horse with quite a good neck, and I did him with the top third navy, the middle third white, and the bottom third red. He looked stunning. I wish I could find the photo.
As a braider that works for one of the pros with a massive client list, we go with what folks want… That being said, last weekend in vermont I braided in black, brown, grey, slate blue, hunter green, and lilac… So it’s all over the place. Deep purple is also a thing. The ponies have gotten quite colorful. Most of the pros are using lots of color when requested by trainers or riders or owners.
That being said, we are all pros, so the braid jobs look excellent no matter the color. I prefer color because there’s a lot less butchering happening upon unbraiding… And I think it’s a fun addition to what can be a very stuffy, traditional sport.
Also know an A/O hunter…big dapple grey gelding. Always done in pink sparkly yarn. He looks adorable. But to each their own. Someday I’m going to own a chestnut hunter that I braid in hunter green and I’m going to wear rust breeches and a green coat, and it will be fabulous.

PLEASE post pictures if you can!
I usually err on the conservative side and match the mane if I don’t know the client or I’m working for another braider unless I’m told to put a specific color in. I used to bring a big bin of colored yarn to local shows and let the kids and moms pick their own colors which the had a lot of fun with. I have done dark navy in a black mane several times and is perfectly acceptable and makes it easier to see when removing braids.

I’m glad to see this more common. I’ve always liked a bit of color in the mane. I used to braid my plain Jane dark bay gelding in navy. That was, gosh, 17 years ago? Wow, I’m getting old.

I’m not a fan of the dark color in the grey pony, personally. But I like the black in the grey mane!

These are beautiful braids and these ponies look like they have beautiful necks. Now I am thinking of all the beautiful yarns out there and maybe, just maybe might be tempted to do a sparkly black yarn for Halloween at least? With one little discreet pumpkin charm? Thanks for sharing your beautiful work:) In the past when DD was wearing removable choker collars I used to love doing holiday colors, pink heart for Valentine’s Day, etc:) so much fun. Less options with the wrap collar shirts. I’m a fool for a monogram of any type:)
