Colt with one Testicle

Did you get the surgery done?

Be sure to fully read the terms and conditions of the Unwanted Horse Coalition’s assistance. You have to get approval of funds before you schedule an appointment with any veterinarian or hospital. I learned of the assistance too late, and had already scheduled Gunther’s surgery and transport. Even though the surgery was a month out, I didn’t qualify for aid.

There may be other funds available in your area as well. Give gelding assistance a Google and you may be surprised.

Use this as an opportunity to improve your horse handling skills.

A good stallion will be no worse than a dominant gelding to handle…but it takes education, structure and discipline to produce a well behaved equine citizen…regardless of wether it posses testicles.

While it’s less likely that he’ll drop that second testicle as others have said, it’s possible the one that appears missing has descended just not all the way into the scrotum. Tranquilizers and someone who can palpate will tell you whether it’s within easy reach or not. I also own a breed that is known to have certain lines that will carry one high but by the time they’re three you usually know they’re both there.

Also I don’t find handling stallions to be difficult or any different than handling other horses as long as you’re always aware of what they’re thinking and what’s going to get their attention. Make everything black and white in your expectations and stay hyper-vigilant to your surroundings and you should do fine. I ‘rescued’ an intact mustang a year ago mostly because the kid who originally rescued him was a little backed off and didn’t have the money to geld him or really feed him. I waited to put weight on him before gelding him (not expensive because both were obviously down and he had sired a few foals - saw them with his band of mares). Had there been a justifiable reason to keep him intact I would have because he is so level headed and well behaved; but, I did geld him after he gained close to 300 lbs.

Also, shop around you may be able to find surgical facilities that are willing to work with you especially if you explain to them what and why you did what you did. Most of us vets have a big ole “S” stamped on our forehead for sucker. It’s why I ‘rescued’ the mustang I did for a much higher price than was logical.
