Communities in NOVA with lots of trails

Your post really gave me hope that there were more “course community” areas in Montgomery county that I just hadn’t been able to find out about. How wonderful that a planning commission would check with a trail riding association concerning easements. I am relocating back to Virginia and Maryland from Texas and have spent 1 million hours trying to research horse communities in either state. I was hoping to find something similar to the way horse communities are structured in Aiken, SC with miles and miles off communal trails, but have just not had any luck. Possibly I’m putting in the wrong search criteria. Does anyone know of such an area anywhere in Virginia or Maryland? Very very much appreciated.

Hi CalPal! I just saw your post and I’am really curious about the community you mentioned off 66. I’m up and down that freeway frequently since I have a couple of horses I shipped here from Texas staying temporarily in Boyce, VA while I’m searching for a home. Any information you have about a “community” in that area would be very, very much appreciated. It’s such a beautiful area. Thanks again.

CalPal…me again. I’m still learning the ropes using these forums, but I think the word “training” next to your name might mean you are an eventer. I was an active competitor for over 30 years doing events, three day, and fox hunting. As hard as it is for me to scale all that back… I should probably concentrate primarily on trail riding. But…OMG I just loved it all!!

Not neccesarily. The default words next to your user name refers to how long you have ben a member, and how many posts you have. That is why yours is “Greenie.” “Training Level” is the next level up. You can also get a customized one by asking the Moderator.

If you want CalPal to see your question, you should put an “@” in front of their name in your post. Then they will get an email that “someone mentioned you” or something like that, with a link to the post.

I’ve lived in NoVA for over 40 years (Fairax, Fauquier, Prince William), and I am not aware of a “riding community” “just off 66” in Fauquier, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. And a community that existed 8 years ago might not be there now.

If you want access to trails, in addition to the Manassas Battlefield Park already metioned (though they are now scheduled to build multiple giant data centers along its western bondary), there is the W&OD trail, a defunct railway (Washington and Old Dominion) right of way that has been converted to a horse, bike and hiking trail from just outside DC, through Vienna and Leesburg to Purcellvlle. https://www.novaparks.com/parks/washington-and-old-dominion-railroad-regional-park

I would not count on “hunt country” for long term trail access. Many hunts that used to be in NoVA have had to move their hunt country much further south (e.g., Stafford County). The two that immediately come to mind are Fairfax Hunt (in Fairfax County) and Bull Run Hunt (in Prince William). I used to ride on the trails they maintained, but now they are houses. And Casanova Hunt recently just shut down.

That is some seriously helpful news. Also, thanks for educating me on the “trainee” caption. Certainly now that I think about it that all makes perfect sense. How in the world would they know what riding level people participating in the forum are. Duh! There is so much more development here than there was 22 years ago when I left for a job in Dallas. I know things can’t stay the same forever, but was still hoping there might be some of those communities still around. I’ve been very, very actively searching for pretty close to six months now, but I’m sure something will turn up. Many thanks for your help.
