Complaining neighbor

I have already talked with the county about our zoning after thoroughly reading the ordinances to make sure I was in compliance and understanding the zoning correctly. They assured me I am.

Also my neighbor does not have a “good nature” by demanding and threatening. I would have been more than happy to have had a conversation. My neighbor left no room for communication.

The irony was that when she moved the barn to please the neighbor (it ended up being cheaper in the long run) she discovered that the neighbor had buried drainage conduit 200 feet into her property!

Not surprisingly the neighbor didn’t understand why it couldn’t stay and was angry when they had to pay to have it moved onto their property AND re landscape.

I hope your friend continued to ride at her regular time and effectively giving the finger to the neighbor with the barking dogs. The dog barking is not your friend’s problem. Tough s__ if it wakes up her baby. Dog owner doesn’t want to be reasonable, then heck with her.

Eh. A piece of land may be perfectly “suitable” when a person buys it (i.e., surrounded by other farms or a nice buffer of woods) but there’s no guarantee it will stay that way. Those farms and woods might be torn down and replaced with a subdivision in a few years, or the neighbor’s old farmhouse might be replaced with a McMansion built on the property line right next to the farmowner’s barn or arena. The farmowner might not have the means or desire to move elsewhere. All we can do is our best.

A little different since you were there first and had things already in place. From what I can see the OP’s neighbor was there first and he/she built the arena after buying the property.

If someone chooses to put their new house next to your barn/ arena / property line then they have nothing to complain about and I wouldn’t change things to accommodate them at all.

This is true … but nothing stays the same.
People get up in arms over a million and one things that their neighbors do, either because they don’t like or because they think it affects their property value.
There are a lot of fine lines between what we all consider acceptable and unacceptable in terms of what you can do that might bother your neighbors.
Whatever your neighbor is doing, it could probably be worse. A horse arena that’s only in use for a short time everyday just doesn’t seem that bad. Sure, it creates dust. There might be things OP can do to minimize the dust. It is agricultural, though, and crops and harvesting crops also creates dust. I think to a lot of people, this just doesn’t seem all that bad.

In case anyone was curious - here’s an update:

My pest control guy came in november and my complaining neighbor is his father in law(FIL). Pest control guy(PCG) is very nice so I asked if his FIL is ok. He told me he was sick around the time this all happened, but as a stubborn old man refused to see a doctor. At the point PCG and I were talking his FIL was doing better. PCG said he was shocked to hear FIL threatened us, as FIL has always talked about how he enjoys seeing our horses and watching me build my business. PCG didn’t want to get in the middle of anything which I was thankful for and assured me I was in no wrong, no one in their family was upset with me.

FIL/my neighbor has been back to watching some lessons, but has not said anything further and has been watching respectfully from a distance (his garage) when we have had warmer days.

So you you reported him as a pedophile for nothing?

Interesting.

What are you talking about?

FFS it was me who mentioned that word and I never called him that. What I said was that we can never tell what he is thinking, the same thing being done could have different motives, from totally innocent to not so innocent. People just saw that word and said he was called that. Get off your high horses.

So at this point you’ve outed yourself as pretty petty and ridiculous.

I don’t care if you are 60 or 600, Methuselah, give it a rest.

FFS.

@gahorseygal I am glad it resolved.

Okay. Let’s recap.

The OP smears an old man as “creepy,” threatening and a possible pedophile, even reporting him to the police, as CotH cheers her on.

It then turns out the guy did absolutely nothing wrong.

So, naturally, a random poster appears weeks later to tell me I’m petty and ridiculous.

:slightly_smiling_face:

You guys NEVER disappoint.

Let him sue for dust. He won’t win.

I think this whole thread is a good reminder that irrational behavior and sudden personality changes are often really mental health issues, and that it would be helpful if there was some way to get timely health or social worker involvement.

Almost all random assaults in our city have a clear mental health component, so it’s not nothing. But it’s possibly better dealt with by trying to get proactive support for the person somehow.

Easier said than done.

The OP never reported him as a pedophile or even mentioned that.

And he did actually threaten her.

So, recap over.

I think you are being unreasonable about “winning” without knowing the details. I do water my indoor arena for dust control so the riders and horses do not inhale dust while working. (I’m on 100 acres and the barn has no neighbor’s within 10 acres)to have to worry about. My arena is 30x60 m. I have great water pressure and use 1 100 ft hose and it takes me 2 hours to water the arena at 12-15 min a section. This has to be done 3 x a week. She may have no time to do this, AND its an outdoor arena so I would imagine dries out way faster than mine would…
Watering from a well 600 ft away may not even offer enough pressure to run the sprinkler. She may have to put a higher powered pump in. I think all things considered, it would be extremely expensive to water, and unless she puts in an actual sprinkler system, not very effective
