Compounded ulcer meds

Some people say that omeprazole is better than any antacid or coating agent. However, one product that contains a combination of antacid and sulcralfate can be a good adjuvant to Ulcergard in helping prevent ulcers. It is used as a short-term protectant, just before exercise, which gives a buffering effect against acids during exercise.
I think omeprazole is not yet widely used and understood by veterinarians, also it’s important that it’s compounded properly by a pharmacist to buffer it and ensure it gets delivered to the small intestine.

My ulcer-prone horse does very well with 3/4 scoop of Equishure (for hind gut) mixed into his Triple Crown Senior, and one Nexium mini-cap (like omeprazole) dropped on top. This is once a day in the am.

Same concept as posted above. For both the stomach and gut. This is a very low dosage but seems to be all he needs.

I’ve used this product in the past when my horse exhibits ‘ulcer’ symptoms (grinding teeth, loose stools) and it has helped us through a flare. I would use it again if really needed but I’m focusing more on long-term management now with dietary changes and new supplement. Its also frequently on back-order.
