Cone Alternatives-Update need advice post 22!

My dog didn’t pull the basket muzzle off and had no problem sleeping or drinking with it on. He seemed happier with it than with the cloth collar. I never left him unsupervised with the muzzle on for more than a couple hours because I was worried about him getting the strap hung up on something - my dogs don’t wear collars in the house for the same reason. So it’s about your own comfort level (I’m a worst case scenario kind of gal ).

Help!!! I just took my dog to the vet to re-check and the foot is worse! He has several small fractures now. There is no evidence of bone remolding. They are recommending no split and just keep him quiet at home for 3 weeks. Will the bone heal with no cast? It is on a non-weight bearing toe but he is pretty lame. I am pissed!

Often small fractures aren’t apparent on initial imaging but are seen on the followups, so it’s quite likely they’re not new. If the bone is stable, it will heal. If he’s so miserable in the cast and cone, pulling it off seems like a reasonable thing to try with a non weight bearing fracture.

If you’re unsure or concerned about your vet’s plan, have you thought about a second opinion? You should be able to send the imaging off to a teaching hospital or referral center.

What Simkie said above.

I will add, that keeping an injured pet quiet is never fun. But it is necessary.

You might have to talk to your vet about some sedation since this dog is not crate trained.

Healing things is slow.
But you’ve got this. It will be over soon enough.
Deep breath.
Before you know it, you and the dog will no longer be miserable.
