Conformation - strong loin

All the good GP dressage horses I have ever seen have had incredibly strong loins. They may be very different in other parts of their anatomy but they are all the same behind the saddle. IMHO it’s the most important thing to look for in a potential GP horse.

I bred a foal last year who had to strongest loin connection I’ve ever seen. He’s been sold to a talented young rider so I hope they go on to do great things together.

Just going to work out how to link a picture.

One reason I do speak up on this conformation trait, is that I’ve seen several high performance horses with poor loins. You can’t always tell when you see them under saddle and going, but then you see them untacked, and it is a bit of a  I just don’t feel comfortable naming horses, but yes, CDI winners, short and long listed, even approved stallions with long, weak loins. Most have been improved by the work they are doing. I think people would be surprised.

Having said that, I agree, it is a desirable trait. As are good legs and feet, a well set neck, and good angles in the hindquarters! I am less concerned about a pretty head then I am about these traits. But -most importantly of all - a good brain.
