Constipated Cat -- Getting Better :)

O my goodness I had not thought of syringing prune juice!  I don’t want to be punished by prune juice.
She seems to be feeling so good and has eaten so well today that I’m jingling for another nice big poop in the box tomorrow morning – or later this morning since it’s already past 1 am. I feel like following her every time she goes into the bathroom but when I did that once before she left without doing anything and then snuck back later on by herself.

Lactulose worked well for my cat. Miralax did nothing but I wished it had, it was so easy to give in food.

I tried a lot of different things for him, plain canned pumpkin in canned food with extra water, psyllium, miralax, slippery elm, but lactulose was the most effective.

He had crf and the vet thought sub q fluids would help the constipation but it never did even when he was getting them twice a day.

rubygirl, how often did you give your kitty lactulose, and how much did you give at a time? Our vet started us out at 2ml but said I could adjust at need, and I think I have about 4ml left.

I was hoping for a nice big normal poop today but she has only done one small one so far. Sometimes she makes up for a little one later in the day.

I have also put her dry food back out that I kept up yesterday; for all I know, she needs the bulk of it in addition to her canned food.

When she wakes up from her current nap I will offer some laxatone hairball remedy. Hopefully she will like it today.

When Thomas was the worst, I dosed to effect. Sometimes it took 8 ml a day. That was after several trips to the vet for enemas and a second opinion.

I even tried adding a little olive or vegetable oil to his food sometimes and I would give him a little tuna packed in oil as a treat. Not often, but sometimes it seemed to help.

It can take a while to find what works for you and your kitty. What worked for others was like doing nothing for mine.

Thanks, rubygirl.

So far so good this morning, after some laxatone hairball remedy yesterday.

Thanks, everybody!

Yay!! When you have a constipated cat it’s wonderful to have poop in the box!

On one cat forum I read this weekend one poster talked about doing a happy poopy dance when their constipated cat finally pooped. I know how they felt!

Absolutely! I hope things continue to move along smoothly

Another day, another “dollop”! Yay! 2/3 in the box, 1/3 outside, which is not great for her because all is not back to normal yet, but better out (of her) than in, and at least I did not step on it.

And this morning when she turned up her nose at 2 of her favorite foods, I brought her dish into the living room where I was having my own breakfast, and over the next hour she ate almost all of it, a little at a time.

Today is a good day. ^. .^

Purrger King - love it! lol

I hope she starts eating better soon and I don’t blame you - when they don’t feel good I feed them where they’ll eat. Granted, I have food monsters now, but still.

As I was reading y’all’s Purrger King (love that!) posts, she came out of the bathroom, so I got up and went in there and …

Yay! Another BIG poop! Extra good this morning because I forgot to give her her hairball laxatone last night. :frowning:

She ate a good breakfast this morning, and just asked for more. We are doing Purina One today (so far) because she is tired of the Weruva (for now).

This sounds so much like my cat, lol. She is 17+, has had constipation problems for a while now. We do 1/8 tsp Miralax (per vet instruction) twice daily and that seems to help so long as we dont forget AND she likes what its mixed in. we always add water. I will add that she still sometimes does not use the box, but has(thankfully) one go-to location. Wish we could figure a better solution to this but she is old and opinionated and I hate to rock her boat. Also do cat lax now and then - she loves that.

When my 19yo kitty started getting constipated I added Miralax to her food, which helped.

I’m glad your kitty is better and I hope she is continuing to improve.
