Has anyone had any recent positive or negative experience with Cornet Obolensky semen?
I am also interested in this!
There have been pregnancies in the US according to Jens at Global Equine Sires. I own a dose that was froze in 2014 but have not used it yet. The dose should not be split and the full dose should be used at once exactly at the time of ovulation, which means ultrasounding every three hours around time of ovulation.
I had a friend last year try a partial dose (2 out of 3 straws) and she was not successful. In Europe, however, his dose is two frozen .5ml straws.
the westfalian verband just published 2014 breeding figures. CO is stated to have had 97 breedings. this means, 97 westfalian breeders have had their mares positively confirmed with the verband, excpecting a foal in 2015.
note:
these are westfalian figures only.
other verbands do not publish numbers but i think it is a fair assumption to make, that you can easily double or triple these figures globally for 2014.

And these were conceived with fresh semen???
not sure.
when the semen station in ukraine was built two years ago or so, s.o. said distances within time limits (O/N) would be served fresh.
i have no idea how they did or do that, if part is fresh or part is frozen or if everything in 2014 was delivered frozen o/o germany (as CO was supposed to be in germany for a short while and collected for frozen and i saw that offered by ligges at the beginning of last year http://www.gestuetligges.com/cms/front_content.php?idart=21&changelang=2).
again:
not sure about actual situation.
I had heard that he is only being bred frozen now. I thought of breeding my mare in Europe (thought I wish I had) before I brought her over but when I called his owners they told me the same frozen in the US is the same frozen in Europe. Only difference though is that the European price is LFG and you only have to pay about half if the mare does not take.
**I want to add that I just received an update from my vet and I am breeding my mare sometime during the night tonight to Cornet Obolensky so in two weeks I will update everyone with the results. We are using the full three .5ml straws and checking ovulation every two hours to three hours.

Good luck and fingers crossed!
Good luck and look forward to the good news!

Haha well so it goes. The vet didn’t like the follicle so decided to wait until her next cycle… so it goes. We didn’t want to waste the semen if everything wasn’t looking perfectly. She went straight from quarantine to the vet clinic and had been all over Europe a few weeks prior and she was cycling funny so the vet thought it better to wait another cycle.
Will provide an update in three to four weeks :-). Vet thinks she should have another follicle in two weeks from now…
A few by him due in Ireland this year from frozen.
Terri
I have heard old batches used in Europe wehe not successful.
I have never heard about a LFG in Germany on a stallion be it fresh or frozen - so that must be some sort of fairytale. Especially with frozen in most time you buy a number of straws and that’s it no guarantee. Only if you are lucky they offer frozen for a flat fee for a season and you get more doses (mostly in combination with using a specific vet)

The LFG was not all your money back, if I remember correctly it was $3k Euro for four tries and if after the fourth time, your mare does not take you got around half your money back - so partial refund. It was not a LFG like in the US where you can try multiple season and even switch which mare the contract was for. Also, I think you had to bring the mare to one of the stations that they run.

FYI for anyone interested, the vet said the semen quality looked “good” and had no negative comments. He didn’t say “amazing,” but typical quality he sees coming from European frozen semen.
Do you know what your vet thought the post thaw motility was and whether or not she was happy with the concentration? Feel free to PM me.
The new collections last year were delivered to Holstein where so far no mares are preg with it this spring and so I cancelled my planned breeding.
Too much of a gamble for me. Not sure if the semen here is the same.
Well the CO babies are now arriving in Ireland so it to be somewhat alright.

My friend just had a foal by CO in the UK and used three straws. Now doses are being sold as two straw doses both in US and Europe.

Bayhawk -
Have you had success with Comme il Faut frozen semen? Or known of others who have?

I asked my vet on the phone last week, he said the semen looked good - concentration and motility and he had no negative comments. He said they only note motility or concentration if it looks low or of poor quality. But I will ask him again if his lab noted the specifics when I see him Thursday as he was a bit rushed on the phone.
We used three straws and so did my friend who has had two successful pregnancies this year in Europe using CO’s frozen. I know most people now are only using two straws as a dose. Also, I left her at the repo facility where they were monitoring her every two hours for ovulation during the middle of the night and inseminated her right as she ovulated. We did not split the dose.
I went into knowing it was a gamble and I thought I would breed early enough that I would have time to rebreed to someone else if it doesn’t take. I figured I would try it once. I have a friend in the US who used two straws on an older mare and it did not take. But I think her mare is 16 or 17.
My mare has her 14 day check on this upcoming Thursday, so I will update you then.
