Cornet vs Diamant

Hey guys! I’ve decided to breed my Ramiro mare this spring, and my two top contenders are Cornet Obolensky and Diamant De Semilly. I’d like to hear the good, the bad, and the ugly! I absolutely LOVE Cornet O (Corrado is my favorite horse ever!), but I’m worried about the temperaments he throws. Diamant seems like a sure bet, but his foals seem like late bloomers, and don’t typically mature into the prettiest of horses.

Worry less about CO’s temperament than his poor semen quality.

Ugh, tell me about it. This will be the second season of trying with him.

I have a friend that bred her maiden mare to CO and she was pregnant first try. I think they followed a specific protocol with very frequent ultrasounds but otherwise nothing special.

try to enlarge your stallion selection (perhaps some sons of these) …

Both DdS and CO absolutely need blood mares (real blood mares not those that have 50% in the 6th generation) and Ramiro is not known for light models and blood types.

Evidently, if your mare is a Ramiro daughter out of a TB-line …

I have a DdS mare and she is amazing. VERY smart, responsive, and willing. Beautiful jump, gaits smooth and okay (would not win a hunter hack class but would place). Very little mare-ishness about her - very easy-going. I vote DdS!

My mare is not your typical Ramiro…VERY blood type- light build, and hot potato personality. Thanks for that info, I think she’d be a good fit.

I would not put it past Ramiro to still show up ‘heavy’ even as a grandsire. For that reason I’d consider a son of DdS or CO, over either one. What is your mare’s actual pedigree? DdS definitely can throw heavy/stubby… The dam-line is pretty important when considering a pairing…

What does your mare need improving? Just temperament? Is this for a jumper foal, I’m assuming?

I’ll definitely keep that in mind! They both have exceptional sons.
After looking at my mare’s papers again I realized she’s actually by Ritual, so grand-sired by Ramiro. Out of Dolores, who is by Don Carlos.
My mare has won all over in the 1.35m, but I’d like to add more scope. Conformationally she’s quite lovely, but a petite 16.1, so adding bone/size would be ideal. Personality wise she’s a hot potato, and while I enjoy it, I do not wish to add more fire. Yep, breeding for the highest quality jumper that I could get lucky enough to breed. Really looking for proven sires.
