Correction when horse calls out for buddies while being ridden?

Color of light-“What if it was a stallion calling while being ridden? Same response?”

Absolutely! the last thing anyone needs is a distracted stallion… Under saddle you want them to turn into a preacher, not a one man band.
 Exactly! I meant…with a stallion would the correction be different or more direct?

A little half halt and carry on attitude here. No punishment but a focus.
You’re lucky that correction works. On horses who are tense, tight backed, passaging, calling, a half halt will only gather them up more, which can lead to more tension.

Pony club kick & immediately make them work harder- circles, changes in gait, etc. I don’t tolerate that rude behavior, usually only take 2-3 corrections before it’s gone permenately.

Nope! Same old thing. Do something, something that makes him pay attention to you. If you are walking, pick him up and trot and then downward transition, , do 5 of these in a row, then go do serpentines. Depending on the level of training you just make it more or less complicated.

Just make them go forward and pay attention. If the whinny was in conjunction with a head toss to the outside to look to their friends, then they’d feel some inside leg and rein as well.

a horse that does this isn’t herded up with you. you should be their source of comfort and support. when i have been working consistently with my mare, she ignores the calls of other horses and doesn’t call out herself. if i leave her without work for a week or more, she goes back to seeking comfort from other horses.

to get your horse to find comfort in you, make her work around other horses, and let her rest when she’s alone with you, or chooses to leave the other horses.

if you are out riding alone and she calls to other horses, change the subject. serpentines, circles, and especially ask her to back up. horses can’t focus on two things at once.

but most of all, build a bond with your horse that is so strong that she isn’t interested in other horses when she’s with you.

if the horse is anxious, punishment will only intensify the anxiety for the next ride. i gnore it and keep working thru it

Whinnying isn’t the problem, it is only a symptom of the fact that you have lost your horse’s focus. So you need to ride better  Be more interesting. Make the exercises more challenging. If you are doing your job well, there will be no whinnying.
