CotH hunt roster issue -- Hunter's Rest gets a BIG surprise!!

SLW - I’ve had my hands on dozens (hundreds?) of racehorses-turned foxhunter. Never had an issue of note. Not all of them turn into ‘guest’ horses but its my belief that soooo many people fall for the ‘ooooooh!! He “thinks” he’s at the races!!! He was a RACEhorse, you know!’ mentality that they don’t ‘require’ the horse to act like a christian. Horses are, uh, smarter than that. They, uh, know if they’re at the races or at a hunt or at a schooling show. Trust me. They know. “Issues” with tb’s off the track transitioning to the hunt field, I’ll bet, are a smaller percentage than other “types” of horse coming into hunting.

HR, how did he get that name?

I was only curious because Snake had been a winning race horse  , a guy use to being out in front and fast. I had a OTTB mare and she was a saint, just way toooo slow to race.

FTR, where is the angel chorus??? My COTH arrived today, on Weds, for the first time in forever! Great article on your family’s horse and the photos are 10 times better in print than on the website.

Talk about pea green with envy! I just would give my eye teeth to have had your life! Imagine racing all those places and training all those horses and living in the middle of hunt country…all I ever heard from my folks was “nobody ever makes a living from horses!” Now I’m re-riding after 30 years, or limping along over 2’ jumps with a horrible chair seat, but you know, every day at the barn is a good day. Just smelling his furry good smell on my clothes gives me peace of mind  If you ever decide you need a 50ish “will work for food” kind of student with two master’s degrees (and a horrible chair seat) with a fancy moving QH in tow, just PM me sometime

SLW - again, Snake, and 99.9 percent of other racehorses, winners or not, ‘know’ when they are being ‘asked’ to run, to try, vs. when they’re being asked to remain polite. Simple difference. Most tb’s, heck, most horses, are to a certain extent competitive, but all can be requested to stay polite.
Tantivy - The horse came already named. But the story suggests that the name was a legitimate reflection on his general character. If you’d met him as a 12 yo or something, with that sort of snake-y behavior, you’d think ‘ooooh, he needs chiropractic (or a new saddle, or a barefoot trim, or an animal communicator’) but … he came with the snake name, and I assume he was always, even from a foal, like that. Trust me. He got all the special care (saddles, bits, shoes, acupuncture, etc.) to rule out those things as spurs for his cranky attitude. It disappeared, the attitude, when at work. He was like one of those grumpy old military guys who actually turns out to have a heart of gold.
Mortebella - Come anytime. :o)

HR- I was delighted to open the magazine yesterday and realize that the jockey in the picture was you! I was very impressed.

Also, the lovely art on the cover was done by the chief fence judge for the upcoming Middle TN Pony Club HT. She is quite multitalented.

It is so nice to see a fabulous Middle TN story in the Hunt Roster issue.

That is a very nice surprise HR! Congrats!!

I still haven’t gotten mine

Who do I contact of COTH to get my issue? It seems like all of Missouri at least the St. Louis area is lost in the mail.

PW, this is the first year in many where mine has actually shown up within three weeks of publication! In years past I just went to the magazine’s home page and figured out the appropriate circulation contact and emailed, and they happily sent me a second one. Most of the time, the original showed up pretty mangled, about six weeks later. My theory is that the snails pulling the mail get pretty uppity and cranky when they get a whiff of the Great Salt Lake.

I found an email for circulation

I’ve sent them a note saying I didn’t get it. What suprises me is I think hardly anyone has gotten theirs in this area. It’s like a whole bundle got lost.
