COTH Pony Finals Article

Honestly, people here have tried to help you to understand the issues presented by this pandemic virus, one that has not been seen in humans until now. You just don’t seem able to wrap your head around the transmission of a viral disease. It is very disappointing.

However, since you specifically seem to be unaware of the effectiveness of one of the oldest and most basic methods of the prevention of communicable disease, IE hand washing, I can’t say I’m surprised.

Horrified? Yes. Surprised? No.

Notice of Positive Covid 19 Test

We were notified on July 31, 2020 that two individuals have tested positive for COVID-19 after attending the Kentucky Summer Classic. Per the requirements of the USEF COVID-19 Action Plan, we are notifying all individuals who were in attendance at the competition. One individual was on the grounds for a very brief period of time on Monday afternoon, July 27th and was not in close contact with anyone else. The other person was last on the grounds on Friday morning, July 31 and has not returned. All individuals who were in contact with this person have left the competition grounds.

Our staff continues to work diligently to ensure the competition venue is properly sanitized and all protocols of the USEF COVID-19 Action Plan are followed. We ask that individuals on-site remain committed to wearing face masks or face coverings, adhere to social distancing guidelines, and practice frequent hand washing and hand sanitization to mitigate risk while on-site.

It’s already happening.

USEF knows that it’s going to happen. They have also made it clear that they will accept no responsibility when it does. A complete failure of leadership.

The infected people have left the grounds, so it’s no longer USEF’s problem, it’s everyone else’s.

I understood the trainer wasn’t at all happy about being asked to leave. I also saw a photo that the trainer in question had posted on their FB page yesterday with NINE students in a golf cart and not a one had a mask on.

I hope that someone who has access to facebook will send those sorts of photos on to the Kentucky Health authorities.

So four people on the grounds recently tested positive for COVID. And NOW we’re shutting it down. Isn’t there some analogy about horses and barns that you’d think USEF would be familiar with. :frowning:

Anyway, I hope all these people are ok. And I hope those who were already en route and had travel plans aren’t hugely put out by the last minute cancellation. Really the prudent thing would have been to cancel/postpone/change the plan a LONG TIME prior. But here we are.

I just hope everyone is ok.

Definitely cancelled and barns already moving out. There is talks the rest of the weeks won’t go, and that possibly no more USEF shows.

I saw some social media posts by people from California that were already there for pony finals.

Stay safe everyone.

That sucks. No two ways about it.

The two I saw were not from the 1% either. One was likely a once-in-lifetime deal. Feel way worse for those folks.

Surprise! Hold a big show during a pandemic and the virus spreads. Absolute idiocy.

Too bad about the damage already done… I’m so disgusted with USEF it’s beyond words.

No more USEF shows anywhere? or just at KHP?

I say this because Gov DeWine of Ohio supposedly went to a QH show at the WEC a couple of weeks ago and no one was wearing masks. Don’t know if that had any thing to do with QH Congress being cancelled, but the general trend seems to be that horse showing, while basically kinda low risk, is being jeopardized by people who just don’t want to follow the rules. Sad!

I feel extremely bad for barns who trailered out from far away only to have it cancelled right before beginning - I completely disagree with the show being put on, but it should’ve been cancelled a long time ago.

I have conflicting feelings. While I really think that under the circumstances people should take responsibility and not travel for pleasure during a pandemic, I also believe that the NGB of Horse Sport should not invite them to do so.

Poor judgement on one hand + Poor leadership on the other. Someone has to step up and so far leadership is mostly non-existent (looking at you USEF) and many individuals seem to make poor public health decisions when left to their own judgement. It’s a shame.

I feel bad for them too, but at the same time I’m wondering WTF they were thinking?
