Counter surfing dog

What I find interesting is what this says about dog intelligence or morality. Clearly Sissy knows that she is not supposed to counter surf because she NEVER does it when I am in the house. She doesn’t do it at night when I’m asleep (overturn the garbage cans). She also doesn’t do it when I’m in the yard. It’s almost as if she waits to hear the engine start on my vehicle before she heads into the kitchen to check out her opportunities.

What is going on in her pea brain that has been able to make a distinction between “not allowed” and “I can get away with this”?

She’s twelve years old and this behavior has only started in the past year or so.

In my own defense, the things that she usually gets from her stove and counter surfing are either warming up from the refrigerator prior to cooking or cooling down on the stove before going into the refrigerator.

what this tells ME, is that Sissy is a smart dog. When you are in the house/yard/sleeping there is a higher chance you will hear/catch her. Once the engine starts, you are FAR less likely to catch her.

Probably the first time was chance, after that, somewhere along the line you have taught her to weigh her options and choose the best chance to get what she wants.

Pie safe.

Ooooo! Great one Alagirl! Stylish AND safe!

My counter-surfer is the smallest of our dogs - my mini-BC. Yes, at all of 17" at the shoulder, she can counter-surf. Of course, being a collie, she learnt very easily to just jump up there :).

So, I dont leave anything on the bench that i dont want “cleaned”. I wouldnt use mousetraps or other noisy stuff 'cause she has fear issues and I am working on making life fun and happy …

Albeit it is funny
