Cushings

So I tested treats to see what she would take. I am not a big treat giver because of having a horse that would bite over treats awhile back.

She thought I was trying to poison her with the orange slice gummy and fruit roll up. So that was a no go.

Then I gave her several baby carrots and just stuck 1/4 of one in one and a few extra to hopefully cover the taste. She thought it was her Birthday .

Then to just to see how she would like the oatmeal pie cookie I gave her a little . OMGosh… She was a HAPPY girl. Nodding her head up and down the whole time . So if carrots won’t work I will try the oatmeal pie cookies.

I don’t give her any grain so I was trying to avoid giving any.

For what it’s worth Boehringer-Ingleheim recommended alternate days dosing for smaller doses. For example half a pill every other day instead of a quarter pill every day.

Do you have info on this?

I have heard that half dose twice a day can be better than the full dose once a day, for a more steady infusion of the drug. This is the first I’ve seen anything like this though

I got it straight from the B-I vet who did a presentation on Cushings at an information session put on by my vet clinic a few years ago.

I also spoke with a friend last week who has a PPID horse and is dosing 1 pill and 1 1/2 pills on alternating days.

I would love to find some info on any study showing that provides better support.

I received the same advice from my vet to dose every other day as it supposedly stays in the system 48 hours if 1/2 a pill was too much and not eating.

This is so timely. Our 22 year old Shetland was just diagnosed. Her level was 137, but normal is 35 for this time of year. Her dosage is 1/2 a pill per day and the vet told us to be sure to put the remaining half in a plastic baggie, sealed up. Try to keep the pill from oxygen exposure. Second dose this morning and I watched her eat it in her senior feed (she has bad teeth as well). So far, she’s eating it. The vet said to back off to a 1/4 for a few days if we see too much appetite suppression.

So according to the Prascend site the max dose for my pony’s weight ( 500-550lbs) is 1pill a day. Why jump straight to that amount after a few days when 1/2 maybe effective ? Is it because her levels are so high?

I will call her on Monday to ask.
