The wound looks really bad - lots of discharge and bleeding. My local vet instructed me not to close the wound - no bandaging at all in order to get this under control. I am so confused - what about support for the tendon if I stop with the bandaging?? But the wound looks really gross and I understand that there can’t be any heeling at the moment - he is still on bute and on antibiotics but according to the vet I’m messing it all up because of the fact that I don’t leave the wound open … help …
Did not read thru all the posts… did you take him to a equine clinic? My mare completely severed her DDFT all the nerves, arteries , right above the heel bulb… nasty NASTY wound… I got her to a equine hospital and she had surgery to pull it back together… she then had several antibiotic washes done thru the tendon sheath… she was put in a cast, then a splint , then a strong support bandage… NEVER was the wound exposed to air. . … I am happy to report she is 100 % sound… It was a long very tiring road , but well worth the effort and the team of vets we saw FREQUENTLY…
Picture???
Could you post pictures?? That might tell us a little more… Sometimes those really bad wounds have a lot of puss and drainage… My mares I told you about a little earlier in this post, she did not too bad but be assured it bled and did drain especially after the stitches came out… its the body healing itself.
But my mother’s amazing gelding back in Oct came in with a wound that was close to degloving his right front leg… it started in the middle of the knee on the inside towards the back all the way around to the outside under the knee… No tendons in the back of the leg were harmed but I do know he did strain the extensor tendon. The cut was as wide as 4 inches in some places… he was cleaned and stitched up and sent to the hospital for 10 days to be watched and on antibiotics. But anyways to my point… He was bandaged with a stacked bandage all the way up to his elbow from his hoof and he pussed and drained a lot also… It was green it was so gross and it actually killed some of the hair at the time. He seen the vet twice a week in the beganning after he came home and they said it was perfectly normal. Now we are six months on that injury and all hair that was killed grew back and we are working on getting the mobility back in that leg for him to jump again.
Horse are amazing animals that really can overcome horrible injuries that you would never think possible… So keep hope… Post some pictures and that will help a lot… my gut says that leg needs to be wrapped and also the other leg to help support it… but I am not a vet… Keep us posted!! I am going to post some links if you want to see my mares injury and my moms gelding… both were way after the fact and well into healing, maybe this weekend I can get some pictures of what they look like today…I will post dates.
OK I will start with my mares:
These are 1 month after her injury… I was battling the proud flesh at this time… Date take 2/16/09…
This was taken 2/22/09… (this is the last time I had my camera out there) I just starting winning the proud flesh battle… and Just as you know I have won that battle!!
Ok and now my moms gelding… These pictures were taken 1 1/2 month after injury… She is not the best at taking photos you will see but hopefully you will see all the drainage he had. And please note these are after the wounds and legs have been cleaned… We only dabbed with a wet cloth when the stitches were in but then scrubbed when they were out…

So like I said keep hope… I will try and get some pictures this weekend if I remember my camera but both horse look fantastic now and are still healing… Both are sound and have been from the start, and are being ridden… My mom’s horse’s battle we still have not completely won but we have hope!!!
just glanced thru your posts Eden… yes , my mare was in the Kemsey splint after her cast… she wore that for 7 weeks…
The key to a cut tendon is to keep it quiet / non movement as possible… after the splint was taken off , we had to do special shoes… with huge heels to keep her hoof at the proper angle to heal , we slowly dropped the heals down every 6 weeks…
Good luck…
Hi there, would love to know how you’re horse is, as my mare has sliced under her pastern, right through to the coffin joint. Was just wondering if you found any treatment in particular helpful? The wound is pretty much healed, we are just worried about her tendons. Thanks
Has a vet examined your mare? What does the vet say?
