Cut the tail or not?? What would you do?

Hate banged tails but I ride Arabians. There are ways to shorten tails that look better and more natural. But conversely I don’t like the dragging a foot on the ground either. The perfect tail to me us the one that brushes the ground when the horse steps forward and the tail elevates.

Cut the tail. If you want your horse to have a gorgeous tail, do not let it get so long that he can step on it and rip chunks of it out. Also, overlong tails (and manes) IMO look unkempt and unworkmanlike. There are many fine styles for a tail. Bang it a few inches below the hocks, bang it above the fetlocks, or carefully trim it into a natural shaped end.

I am currently over the overly thick banged tail look in stock horses. I long for the days when they were pulled to the hocks…seriously I do.

I much prefer what we call in the human long hair world as fairy tail ends. I really wish people would just choose the length that most complements their horse …

Personally I’d cut it. There’s just something about a banged tail - just about every horse looks great.

Because it makes the tail look thicker. Not tapered and scragley at the ends.

Thanks for all the posts…I went to a show last year, and saw a spotted saddle horse with 4 feet of tail laying on the ground behind him. He was beautiful, and so was the tail. I knew then I wanted to grow out my ponies tail. But, he does need to back up at shows and I don’t want to take a chance of him pulling out some again, so I CUT it… Level with the ground though. I love it. It looks a lot fuller. Although it was really thick to begin with.
