Have any of you chicken keepers seen the movie “Chicken People” on Amazon Prime? It’s a documentary about people who breed raise and show chickens.
I’m watching it now. Very fun.
We’ve been so lucky with roos. Only allow one on the farm, and we’re on roo#4. Literally every single one has been docile and friendly, have never tried to attack. Honestly I don’t think I’m doing anything different than any of you, just seem to be lucky.
But yeah, the first roo that does try that will be dispatched. There is absolutely no place on my farm for an animal that wants to hurt people. I had to put down a goat that turned aggressive as he got older. Made me sad to do it, but I just have zero tolerance for a mean animal.
we’ve had a couple of roosters that were aggressive natured, but this is the first one that has ever attacked me. First one in 18 years of keeping the nutty little feathered dinosaurs. I really do blame his breed. (old english game bird). Those standard gamebirds are just a little bit too ‘natural’.
I have one that went from docile pet to asshole rooster as soon as hormones kicked in. He does good for my girls but otherwise ugh. I have kicked him, whacked him with feeders and waterers, pelted pebbles at him, even hucked some bricks at him one time when he cornered me.
I will not be sad if he gets got.
Ah, does anyone remember JSwan and her rooster? Wearing a mask on the back of her head…brilliant
I’ve never had to deal with an aggressive Rooster. The two at the barn now generally mind their own business and avoid humans, but you can still get close to them or touch them if you want to.
At a previous barn they also had roosters and one was soo friendly. You could pick him up and place him on your arm where he’d just sort of roost there. The other also didn’t mind being held, so I’ve been lucky with my experiences, however I still keep an eye on them should they decide to turn evil.
I loved JSwan right up until she killed Kevin. Her posts were always insightful, and occasionally hysterical.
was Kevin the name of this woman’s pet rooster?
No. It was her pig. Kevin Bacon.
i once had a llama that was Kevin Bacon’s doppelganger
Does carrying a bad rooster around like a football, while doing chores, not actually work? I have seen that advice given multiple times on the chicken forum, although I never had a bad rooster to try it on. Carrying them like that for X# of days is supposed to make them more agreeable.
If it does, it is the only thing I have heard of that works.
Slight derail… “Chicken People”, a documentary on Amazon Prime about people who breed, raise and show chickens, was interesting. No angry roosters though.
i’m raising two chicks in the house right now. They’re about 4 weeks old and fledglings. Such different personalities. When i reach my hand in one gets all uppity and pecks and once even flew at my hand, the other hops on my wrist and stays there while i add feed and change their waterer.
The young rooster i raised in the house (born in Sept) is just starting to crow. I call him and he comes running from the horse barn, i feed him a bit and he hops onto my arm and i carry him into the house to cage him for the night. One day he’ll not be coaxed …but not quite yet. I hope upon hope that he remains sweet…
