I have a homeowners/farm policy with Farmers and added an umbrella liability for $1mm in liability. The insurance policy covers our barn and liability for our horses. I recommend that you give Farmers a call. Policies do vary by state, however, since insurance is regulated by the states, not federally.
IT all varies based on state. I am an insurance agent (home/auto) in Florida, and all the major big names deny coverage to those who A run an equine business and B have more than 4 personal use equines on property. Liability is excluded (as it is with dog bites as well) It varies company to company state to state scenario to scenario but you are better off trying to find coverage for liability through a horse-market.
I have a 1M umbrella policy with State Farm and they definitely know that I have horses because my horse barns and trailer are also insured by them. My equine liability insurance is through an equine insurance company.
I am glad to say they called me back and I am approved now. I asked some questions I.e. You realize I get no money for showing or transporting horses and she sent me the email the underwriter sent her. The main guy called me yesterday and I guess he was pretty hot. Turns out his daughter riders h/j and he got it all fixed up for me. He said Colorado is horse friendly and they will back me. Felt much better After that!
