I’ve been happy with the Equifuse line so far But I’m also one who runs Argan oil through the tail regularly.
So far as human products, those that specialize in black people’s hair work well. Loads of conditioner because that type of hair is fragile but coarse. It is in a special section at Target or a drug store.

I’ve heard of that brand but haven’t tried it yet! Does it do a good job with repelling dirt too?

I should probably just list all the other stuff I’ve tried and didn’t like
Works alright for detangling but not repelling dirt:
Canter Mane and Tail
Mane N Tail detangler
Infusium 23 (the people product)
Eqyss products
Repels dirt but too drying on the hair:
Cowboy Magic
Show Sheen
Laser Sheen
Vetrolin Shine
Builds up in the hair and makes it messy:
Healthy Hair lanolin concentrate (and yes, I mixed it correctly)
Ponytail Ready to Roll spray
I know I’ve tried others, but I can’t remember them all! I’m always on the hunt for the trifecta - detangles, repels dirt, and conditions!
I’m confused about if you did/did not use this… anyway…
I may mix it very light, and I spray on for grooming [before/after ride] over entire body and mane/tail and never have a problem with build up. I also add it to my fly spray.
Another fan of Healthy Hair here. Love the stuff.

I like this, It is available in most drug stores and Target.

Believe it or not, I’ve actually tried this stuff! It left her tail with a lot of buildup though so I quit using it. I like the stuff that has silk proteins in it and makes her tail feel super soft, makes a brush or your fingers glide right though it! That’s my only reason for not loving the products like this, or the coconut/argon oil products.

Sorry, I heard the brand and wasn’t sure if I had…so I googled it and then realized it was the concentrate stuff that I HAD tried years ago I may need to give it another go, they may have changed the formula since I last tried it, which I think was back in 2011.
Thanks for all the ideas everyone! And I think there are a couple I may need to revisit based on these reviews…the lanolin concentrate and Vetrolin Shine for 2!

Oh I’ve never heard that brand name, will have to check it out!
i have had great results, especially for the price, with the Mane N Tail stuff (although i buy it at Grocery Outlet in the hair care section).
Has anyone ever tried this stuff? I’ve never tried it but I’ve seen it around for years… http://www.tackshackocala.com/wochpecoco.html
Joining in a little late, but I’ve used Vetrolin Shine for several years now and haven’t had any problems with my horse’s coat, mane, or tail becoming dry or breaking. I like the scent, too.
I have also tried a whole lot of products and I’ve found what works best on one horse is not what works best on another. Which is probably why there are so many products and why some people will swear by one while others will say it’s the crappiest product ever
Example: Vetrolin Shine? Did amazing things to my white pony’s tail. My big bay mare? Eh
Garnier Sleek and Shine leave in conditioner.
I put it on before a lesson with a comb through then rinse it out afterward. He has the softest, straightest, best smelling tail at the barn.

I’ve tried plenty of detanglers over the years and really like this one. Plus, no silicones.

VERY good point!!!
I found a bottle of the Carr&Day&Martin Dreamcoat spray in the back of my trailer tack room; I’ve been fighting with my horse’s tail lately keeping it decent. The stuff smells like lemon Pledge and is ridiculously overpriced, but holy cow has it kept his tail detangled! I’ve sprayed it in once this week, and his tail brushes out for nothing, no breaks or pulls. He lives out 24/7, so his tail gets a lot of sweaty swishing miles on a daily basis.
ETA: I’ve had mixed results with the Healthy Haircare, it really built up in my horse’s coat and tail, too. For the occasional use when it’s really dry, I like it; but not regularly. When he does get a bath, I use the E3 Argan oil shampoo and love how soft it leaves his coat and tail.

I am always hunting for the best detangler/coat spray to both condition and repel dirt! I have tried MANY brands out there, and so far here’s my feedback on them…
Show Sheen/Laser Sheen - They work temporarily but seem very drying to the hair so they aren’t my favorite. I’ve also found they don’t seem to last very long.
Cowboy Magic Detangler - I like this for manes/tails BUT it also dries them out after not long. I actually use Biosilk serum (people product) in her mane and tail and it works similarly but without drying!
Calm Coat Detangler and Shine - Now, I LOVE this stuff!! It works better and for longer than the Show Sheen/Laser Sheen, AND it doesn’t seem to dry out her hair either!
BUT here’s where my question comes in…I thought that the silicone ingredients in Show Sheen, Cowboy Magic, and Laser Sheen was what was drying about them, but after hunting around I finally found the ingredient list for the Calm Coat and it has “Silicone Emulsion” in it. But it doesn’t seem to dry her coat out like the Show Sheen does! Anyone happen to know why/know the difference?
OMG Biosilk was my super secret thing!! Dang I thought I was sooooo smart. It was my left overs after I changed up products. I bought some purology (very expensive!!) leave in oil treatments and they are so disappointing. They attract way too much dust.
Dove conditioner and Biosilk FTW!.
+1 for the Equifuse line also.
Their shine serum (http://equifuse.com/gleam-moisturizer-shine-serum-8-oz/) works great on my horse’s tail - I split it into 4 sections and dribble the serum over each section as I work it individually. Keeps it untangled for 3-4 days unless he goes hogwild in the pasture.
**Also editing to say that it seems to repel dust pretty well too, since that’s one of your big “wants” for the products. I’ll notice some dirt/dust in his tail, brush through it, and it all just shakes off, leaving a lovely tail. Not sure how well their Perfect & Shine Spray works though, which is what you’d probably use for the coat.
