Devin Ryan @ Hamptons
That is the part that just shocks me no end. It doesn’t seem to matter what the discipline is, or how horrendous the abuse. The owners don’t pull the horses and stop it.
Agreed. This really has me pissed off.
What I find more unbelievable is that all his owners haven’t pulled their horses…they can no longer claim ignorance . If I had with him I would have been there immediately with a trailer to take my horses away. Incidents like this is why I refuse to sign any contracts that demand 30-60 day notice be given to a trainer before pulling a horse out of training.
This ^^^

Thats what happens when you drink the kool-aid.
hey HITS; WHY is this man showing today???

Chronicle of the Horse has updated their article with comments from one of the stewards. Horses confirmed to have serious marks on their legs
^^^

This week is the million along with many other HUGE classes ( $500,000 DM Hunter, $250,000 Jr Jumper etc ) and they’re letting someone who sores their horses walk around and show like its nothing. They’re are Olympic riders showing this week it’s not some dingy show don’t you think HITS would like to TRY and keep things classy/upscale and kick him out ? This is the biggest week of the circuit

Like others have said id love to know what his fellow riders think of him showing ( Beezie, McLain, Margie )

Well, FWIW, Daniel Bluman seems pretty upset about it. https://www.facebook.com/blumandaniel?fref=ts

I know, right? They’re treating Saugerties all trashy like it’s Culpeper or something.

Sorry, could not help it. I’ll show myself out.

You think those big GP riders will be even a little surprised? Doubtful. NONE OF THIS IS NEW. In fact one person you mentioned has been suspected of similar behavior.

Maybe the methods change a little but making horse careful by creating leg hypersensitivity is hardly a new technique. Some of the real golden oldies have been doing it a LONG TIME. Many big big winners too, I suspect. And it’s disgusting.

I happen to think HITS should eject him but not because I think all the GP riders are above reproach.

So assumingly everyone has called HITS to complain, right?
HITS Saugerties 845.246.5515

Or emailed Kristen Vale the show manager to at least let her know what is being said: Kristen@hitsshows.com

As disgusted as I am, many people are right that this has gone on for a long time and won’t come as a surprise to most pros.

If you are upset that he is allowed to compete, don’t harass HITS. Propose a USEF rule change that institutes a provisional suspension upon report, as the FEI has.

It’s not a matter of harassing HITS but they might want to know that people think they should not let Devin compete there.

We could do that as well as propose a rule change… right???

I don’t even know if the five horses identified as abused at the Hampton Classic are at Saugerties.

I didn’t mean for it to sound like they should take him out because there are better riders than him I just meant the show is kind of a big deal and that they should copy the Hampton Classic authorities and kick him out.

eh, the infamous chips in boots at Aachen incident was highly suspect from all angles. It may have been as represented by Aachen officials or maybe not, but it wasn’t exactly a shining moment for all concerned.

THIS incident doesn’t seem at all comparable IMO. That said, soring and poling and other tricks to make a horse be careful are older than anyone alive, so I am certain DR is not the only offender. But for egregious, he seems right up there.

You just identified the reason HITS probably won’t kick him out. The Hampton Classic is a much different show than HITS, in so many ways, but the biggest is the way it’s managed and the way that each show’s reputation is crafted. The HC is known for being significantly more selective and expensive. If you don’t get your entries in on time, you’re simply not showing. It’s a relatively small show grounds and there’s a limited number of horses they can physically accomodate. HITS is a huge sprawling facility- pretty much the opposite of Hamptons. At HITS, you can show up last minute and add extra stalls and extra horses and they will welcome you with open arms because hey, why not.
The Hampton Classic may have lost some money by kicking him and his barn out at the tail end of the week, but they wouldn’t have lost an entire week’s worth of entries, stall fees, possible VIP table fees, etc.
This week is the money maker for HITS, and each of those huge $ classes comes with a huge entry fee and nomination fee. Telling a trainer and his entire barn not to come show could result in several tens of thousands of dollars in lost income for HITS. Again, think about entries, stalls, hay/shavings, VIP table, etc. I can imagine that without hard proof or a phone call from USEF telling them what to do, HITS probably would balk at the idea of losing so much income.

I don’t agree or condone this logic, but think of it that way.

Fiction- Thats a good point and I never thought about it that way. I guess I forgot $$$ trumps all especially since River Run is a pretty big barn

Could someone post a link to the Diva site? Thanks.

Just google horse show diva

Even if it was a “little” show…the horses should be checked and monitored by the officials and he should be kicked out if the horses are sored.

I would certainly hope the stewards at Saugerties are keeping a close eye on him at the very least.

Let’s wait and see. How much notice was given by show management for them to vacate the premises ? At that moment, it may have been difficult for owners to arrange for a hauler and find another barn -with available stalls-ready to receive their horses.

At some point we’ll know who stayed and who left.
